MLB Daily Notes - September 6th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
The fall of fantasy baseball analysis in 2024 has been the over-emphasis on the pitch movement stuff. Over and over again this year, I have seen people talking about pitchers, primarily and mostly about the movement of their pitches. Some dude will get 21 whiffs with a 9:0 K:BB, but all these people want to talk about is his fastball “shape.” There are a lot of really cool accounts on Twitter that are taking advantage of the savant data and making cool stuff. But more than half of their page is dedicated to the movements of their pitches. 90% of people don’t care about that.
If you’re talking about a pitcher from yesterday and don’t even mention what he did in the box score, you’ve gone off the path.
You have to play both sides. The analytics (for lack of a better term) may be more predictive of the future (another problem is that a lot of the time, they’re not, but for the sake of argument…), but teams (real life or fantasy) don’t win games based on what is likely to happen in the future, they win games based on what actually happened.
I hope I have done a good enough job not abandoning the real-life results. And I don’t expect I’ll ever be on these pages talking about a guy’s fastball shape. I don’t even know what that means, and I don’t care to find out!
NFL Review
JUST REAL QUICK. That Showdown lineup last night did just what I said it would - minimum cash. It turned my $25 into $50 in the Giant Double Up, and it turned my $15 into $25 in the big million-dollar contest.
That lineup was duplicated 1,284 times (0.6%) in the million-dollar contest and 262 times (23%) in the Double Up. I have begun a tracker for myself:
That puts me at an #elite 87.5% ROI for the year. I should just hang it up now! But there’s another showdown tonight, OH BOY!
Pitcher Review
Thursdays usually don’t give us much baseball action. Here’s the full sheet:
I see that one of you is always viewing that every morning along with me, so shout out to you - whoever you are!
We could almost patent that Taj Bradley outing. We could make it his, call it the Taj Mahal or something.
7 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 10 K, 1 BB
The formula would be when you have at least 6:1 K:BB but give up several runs along the way because of the long ball. We would have to use strikeouts minus walks at the individual start level because we can’t divide by zero. DO YOU KNOW WHAT I’M SAYING?
Every time someone makes a crack like “This guy has a 0.00 ERA in the Majors!” when they have never pitched in the Major Leagues - I roll my eyes and shake my head very slightly while I continue scrolling through Twitter. Zero divided by zero is not zero. It’s not zero. Your ERA is undefined.
Anyways, let’s call THE MAHAL a gap of at least six strikeouts and multiple homers given up. There have been 71 such starts this year. Our boy Bradley only has two of them. The only pitchers with more than two:
Carlos Rodon 4
Andrew Abbott 3
Nick Pivetta 3
But this is kind of a waste of time! Bradley is now at a 4.40 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP on a 27% K% and an 8.0% BB%. That’s a strong K-BB%, but the 1.54 HR/9 has cost him. The league average HR/9 for SPs is 1.14, by the way. Only 11 pitchers have made 20 starts with a HR/9 above 1.50:
Allen 2.03
Pivetta 1.84
Crawford 1.68
Hendricks 1.67
Carrasco 1.65
Abbott 1.63
Civale 1.60
Gomber 1.60
Bradley 1.54
Rodon 1.54
Lively 1.53
That’s tough to survive as far as your ERA goes. Home runs allowed are one of the biggest individual predictors of ERA. The best ERA of the bunch is Andrew Abbott at 3.72.
We saw Pablo Lopez show some increased velocity yesterday!
He gave up three runs on seven hits, so it wasn’t the best ratio day, but impressive across the board:
6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 9 K, 1 BB, 19.8% SwStr%, 48.4% Strike%, 31.9% Ball%
He’s been awesome for a while now. Here are the marks since July 10th:
10 GS, 63.1 IP, 6 W, 2.27 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 22.6% K%, 4.8% BB%, 0.71 HR/9
That’s a pretty low K%; I did not expect that. In that same time frame, he has posted a very strong 14.5% SwStr% with a 30.7% Ball%, so there’s probably been some bad luck on the strikeout front. Anyway, Lopez is an ace and looks to be throwing the ball as good as he has all year right now.
Here are your SwStr% + Ball% MFQs since July began (8 starts minimum):
Chris Sale (14.9% SwStr%, 32.8% Ball%)
Pablo Lopez (14.1%, 30.8%)
Tarik Skubal (15.7%, 30.7%)
Sonny Gray (14.3%, 33.1%)
Shota Imanaga (16.1%, 29.9%)
Spencer Schwellenbach (16.0%, 31.7%)
Bailey Ober (15.9%, 32.7%)
Garrett Crochet (17.7%, 31.1%)
Austin Gomber had his best outing since April 2022.
So there you go, the first positive thing I’ve ever said about Austin Gomber in this newsletter’s history. The Rockies are truly the least discriminating employer in sports history. Black, white, Latino, good at pitching, awful at pitching, whatever, man! No other organization would have given Austin Gomber 94 starts since 2021, but the Rockies are so loyal to their employees. That’s awesome, man.
It’s like that summer job you had as a kid that nobody else wanted, so you could always go back to it the next summer if you couldn’t find anything better. You’d try to get a cool internship, and they’d be like “ew no,” and then you’d take your ass back to the local kids day camp and be like “Hey can I work here again this summer I guess?” and they’d be like “YES THANK GOD”.
That’s Gomber every spring with the Rockies.
Merrill Kelly had a nice start as he gets back into the swing of things after missing most of the season with an injury.
7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 8 K, 0 BB, 12.8% SwStr%, 44.7% Strike%
Here’s how his recent season has gone:
That’s a very bad 9.6% K-BB%, and the Strike% over this time is a pitiful 43.6%, so it’s not looking very good - but he did get it done yesterday. Remember that Kelly has been one of those K-BB% defiers over the last few years.
2022: 33 GS, 14.4% K-BB%, 3.37 ERA
2023: 30 GS, 16.3% K-BB%, 3.39 ERA
We see that he has a history of getting things done without the benefit of many strikeouts, but I would not want to be betting on that outcome again in the 2024 fantasy playoffs.
Bryan Woo, the WHIP+ king, made another start:
5 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 0 BB, 47.7% Strike%, 33% Ball%
This was his second-highest ball rate of the year. He has been pounding the strike zone like no other this year. His 59.8% Zone% leads all starters by a lot. And he’s throwing 72% fastballs. He’s a very unique pitcher.
There was a really interesting thread about him here from Michael Rosen. I opened the notes today talking negatively about pitch movement stuff, and now I’m pointing you to a thread all about… pitch movement stuff. But in this case, I found it very interesting.
That is because Woo is such a different pitcher. If you told me that some starter is out there throwing a mid-90s fastball 72% of the time, I would not expect them to have much success. But you could make the argument that Woo’s fastballs aren’t truly comparable to normal fastballs because the release point is so different. If a hitter sees Bryce Miller’s four-seamer one day and then Bryan Woo’s the next day, they don’t look anything like each other.
So, we have a bit of a classification problem. We’re putting all kinds of different-moving pitches in the “sinker” bucket, for example. Paul Skenes’ “splinker” has been classified as a sinker by the savant algorithm. Giving the same name to that pitch and Michael Lorenzen’s sinker, for example, does create some issues. There’s really nothing similar at all about the pitches.
I guess that’s where some of these pitch movement bros are trying to take us, and there is value in that.
But in life, we need names. We need classifications. We are verbal creatures; we communicate through words. If we suddenly create 50 different pitch types so we can further differentiate pitches based on their movement, we create a big mess and make the game much harder to communicate about. It’s a conundrum.
Long story short, Bryan Woo releases his fastballs very low to the ground, and that jacks hitters up.
Rhett Lowder walked four more but again navigated around trouble:
6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 K, 4 BB, 7.3% SwStr%, 47% Strike%
His arsenal marks after 159 pitches:
It has not been an encouraging start with the low SwStr% and low velocity. There is plenty of time for him to develop into a useful Major League SP in the future, but I’m not using him in fantasy this year.
And the Blake Snell rollercoaster hit another valley.
It took him 42 pitches to get out of the first inning (42.9% Ball%), so the Giants just said hey, take the rest of the day off and try again next week.
And you know what? That works nicely for me. I have him in my main league, but this week and next don’t matter - I’m just waiting for the playoffs to start. In the subscriber league, he was up against me in the quarterfinals. So I’m all for that, Blake - thank you.
Brent Rooker hit is 34th and 35th jacks of the year. Somehow, that guy is still hitting .298. Of all hitters with 400 PAs and a K% above 27%, he has the highest batting average by far:
Rooker .298
Suzuki .277
Ramos .274
Tovar .270
O Cruz .269
Teoscar .266
Elly .264
Greene .255
Marsh .253
JD Martinez .252
In fairness to him, his .277 xBA is also the best of the bunch. He has optimized the launch angel this year; it’s been a very impressive season for the big man.
That plot can pretty much be summarized by barrel rates, but to take it from this plot, the most well-placed dots are:
Aaron Judge
Yordan Alvarez
Shohei Ohtani
Brent Rooker
Austin Riley
Jorge Soler
Kyle Schwarber
Corey Seager
It’s not a very surprising list, these guys have all been among the game’s top power bats for several years now.
And that’ll do it for today.
