MLB Daily Notes - September 8th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
It is 7:10; I wake up. I sneak downstairs hoping to get some quiet time to start up my baseball stuff for the day and get the notes written. But no. On my third step down the staircase, I hear the kids. All three awake at the same time. We come downstairs, trying to stay quiet so Mom can sleep in. Immediately it turns into an all-out search for a very small princess toy. The younger boys help, but their help makes everything worse. We make an absurd amount of noise and make several other messes in the process of finding the toy. Eventually, we find it. Then, the requests for chocolate milk begin. Then, as I am mixing in the Hershey’s syrup, the poop hits. Young Trea Baby drops a mean one. It smells awful. I take care of it. And now, here I sit, writing to all of you.
The golf scramble went exactly as predicted yesterday. I hit a brilliant 130-yard approach shot on the first hole for the team, putting us within 15 feet of the hole for our first birdie. I missed the putt by dozens of feet. The other three guys missed by less than that but still missed.
We finished eighth or something out of 20 groups. We didn’t make a single bogie, though. That’s because there was a rule that said you can’t make a single bogie - the max is a par.
The biggest scandal of the whole day was that they were live scoring the event via a Google Sheet. Imagine my surprise when I scanned the QR code, and it took me there. Imagine the struggle I have not to judge other people’s Excel formulas. The temptation is almost too much to bear. Why was there no “Through” column that counted the number of scores each team had entered to display how many holes they had completed and give more context about their score?
If my career could just be running this Substack and then doing custom Google Sheets and Tableau Dashboards for other people and businesses, oh man. That would be awesome.
Anyways, hit me up if you ever need a cool interactive/collaborative Google Sheet.
Pitcher Review
Eyyy look at that, Jack Leiter finally had a decent one!
5 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 6 K, 2 BB, 23.3% SwStr%, 46.5% Strike%, 40.7% Ball%
Still not great with the strike and ball stuff, but 20 whiffs on 86 pitches. His season SwStr% in the MLB is now up to 13.3%, and the Ball% isn’t awful at 36%. There’s some groundwork to build on here.
This opens an interesting question for next year. Would you draft a young second-year pitcher with great stuff and bad command or a pitcher with bad stuff and great command? I’m thinking about the comparison of a Jack Leiter type with a Cade Povich type.
Leiter: 13.3% SwStr%, 46% Strike%, 36% Ball%, 117 Stuff+, 99 Loc+
Povich: 9.5% SwStr%, 45.5% Strike%, 36% Ball%, 86 Stuff+, 97 Loc+
Okay, bad example - because Povich doesn’t have good command either! But the theory stays.
The correct answer, in normal leagues, is neither. But a lot of us play in these leagues where 400+ players are drafted, and we’ll have to make some decisions about these fresh faces at the SP position. And we will do that. January-March, for me, is the best time of year as far as baseball writing goes, and we’ll spend a ton of time hashing out how to build our pitching staffs for next year.
But we still need to focus on this year. It’s Sunday during the playoffs, so a lot of you might be in a real pinch right now. Some streamers I’d consider for today:
Andrew Heaney vs. LAA
Michael Wacha vs. MIN
Caden Dana vs. TEX
Ty Madden vs. OAK
Seth Johnson vs. MIA
Back to yesterday, Tobias Myers had his best outing of the year. And you’ll never guess who it was against. You’ll never guess! The ROAD ROCKIES!
6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 11 K, 1 BB, 19.4% SwStr%, 54.1% Strike%
The JA projection model was all over that, giving him his highest projection of the season. But that’s a little bit like a weatherman in Phoenix telling you it’s going to be hot tomorrow.
Starting pitchers have scored 2,427 fantasy points against the Rockies this year; that’s the most in the league (that includes Coors games, too). As a unit, they’re hitting .242/.300/.398 overall, but away from home, it’s .216/.273/.360. That’s a .633 OPS, still not as bad as the White Sox .617 mark on the year.
Myers has his ERA down to 2.93 on the year with a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a 22.8% K% and a 6.7% BB%. His SIERA is 4.00. His WHIP+ is 1.77 (league average = 1.93). There’s been some luck there, but the guy can clearly pitch. Good for him. If I were a Brewers fan, I wouldn’t be super hyped about him being the SP2 heading into a series against the Padres, Dodgers, etc. But hey!
It’s possible that Spencer Schwellenbach is tiring out, or hitters are figuring him out more, or something. His last three outings:
15.1 IP, 2.93 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 19.1% K%, 5.9% BB%, 11.9% SwStr%, 49.6% Strike%, 30.8% Ball%
His Stuff+ had come down last time, but we don’t have the marks from yesterday yet.
That will be interesting to watch. The Braves and Mets are in a dog fight for a Wild Card spot, and the Braves strong point has been their rotation. If Schwelly is really crapping out, Atlanta could be in real trouble.
Clarke Schmidt made his long-awaited return:
4.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB, 8% SwStr%, 40% Strike%
Not good, but we always forgive the first outing or two after a long IL stint.
Let’s get back to focusing on next week. Pitchers projected to face the Road Rockies:
→ Keider Montero
→ Casey Mize
→ Tarik Skubal
Projected to face the White Sox:
→ Ben Lively
→ Alex Cobb
→ Matthew Boyd
→ Mitch Spence
→ Brady Basso
→ J.T. Ginn
J.T. Ginn is a really cool name, but the streamers there are clearly Cobb and Boyd, and then maybe Spence if you’re desperate.
How about the Marlins:
→ Paul Skenes
→ Bailey Falter
→ Joey Wentz
→ DJ Herz
→ Mitchell Parker
→ Patrick Corbin
→ MacKenzie Gore
You’re targeting Herz, Parker and Gore there. Anybody projected to start on Sunday (Gore, in this case) is risky though, because there a lot of ways for them to get bumped back a day and not actually make that start.
On the hitting side, the Cubs get a weekend series in Coors Field. So you can stream from that lineup if you’re in need of some help.
Last thing before I get my real-life Sunday going. Hitters that are HOT and AVAILABLE. You call these singles bar hitters. Although, I guess most people at a singles bar aren’t that hot. I’m also not sure a “singles bar” is a real thing. The name’s a work in progress.
→ Seth Brown (.345/.409/.586 Last 3 Weeks)
→ Lars Nootbaar (.302/.380/.460)
→ Michael Toglia (.382 xwOBA)
→ Spencer Horwitz (.300/.373/.633, .379 xwOBA)
→ Otto Lopez (.319/.382/.478, .377 xwOBA)
→ Matt Wallner (30.4% K%, .344 xwOBA) (that’s actually a decent K% for him - lol)
I smell poop again… what does this kid eat?
Have an enjoyable Sunday, I hope all of your wildest dreams come true. Go to church though.
