MLB Daily Notes: Thursday, June 2
Hey it’s Thursday! Thanks for following along with the notes, the continued positive feedback is really encouraging and I’m having a lot of fun doing this every day. It’s also weirdly helpful having other dads in my same situation empathize with me on the stuff I complain about. So thanks to those who have reached out. I don’t really rely on the support or anything, it’s something we all have to toughen up and get through, but it’s still good to hear what some of you have been giving me.
Major delays in the savant data becoming available which has delayed this quite a bit… really nothing I can do about that so I’m not going to apologize!
Pitchers of the day were Jon Gray and Edward Cabrera. Gray went seven innings and struck out a dozen Rays just six days after putting up a bad start against the Athletics. He’s his typical Jon Gray self, showing flashes of greatness but falling flat nearly just as often. I was hyping him up pretty hard before that A’s start, giving him the benefit of the doubt with the slow first month due to injury and the change in scenery, and this start puts me right back there. You’ll definitely have some disappointments in the future, but he’s at least a workhorse-type pitcher who will get deep into games and contribute strikeouts.
Edward Cabrera dazzled in Coors in his 2022 debut. Six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts, but the four walks keep our expectations tempered. He has had major walk issues at every level, so I’m not getting very excited about Cabrera. You don’t just all of the sudden stop walking hitters upon promotion to the Majors, and those mistakes get punished much more often up here. He can certainly be picked up and started in deep leagues because the talent is very real, but until he can throw more strikes I’m going to be generally letting other people deal with it this season.
Brendan Rodgers was certainly the hitter of the day, blasting three homers, scoring five runs, and driving in four at home against the Marlins.
Since May 1, he’s hitting .359 with a .583 SLG and five dingers. Away from Coors over that sample it’s a .275 average and a .300 SLG with no homers, so he’s still got that going on. He’s a young former top prospect, so he’s pretty exciting since he’s presumedly elite when playing at home.
The Rockies are hitting .242, slugging .344, with 1.35 DraftKings points per game on the road this year. At home those marks are .283, .453, and 1.90. It’s just silliness. I almost hope they move that franchise away from Denver just so we don’t have to deal with this anymore.
Rodgers was in my “breakout hitters” piece a couple of weeks ago, and the newest version of that is out today. You can check out those new six names I highlighted over on RotoBaller.
