MLB Daily Notes: Thursday, May 5
We are very late today, but it’s not my fault, so I’m not going to apologize. There was a problem with the baseball savant data load, but it’s worked out now so off we go!
My kids love bubbles, like most kids I’m sure, so every time we’re outside Dani will ask me to blow bubbles for her, which is fine - but it gets to be a little annoying constantly dipping and waving the wand for like 45 minutes. I decided to take advantage of technology and buy a nice big bubble maker for them that I can just set up and then sit and watch them play with. I found a sweet one at Target for just $15 and bought got like a two-gallon thing of bubble mix for like $5 - total steal.
Then I learned yesterday that the children’s bubble toy industry is in bed with Big Battery. This freaking thing takes ten double-A batteries. TEN.
I get it, it has to run a fan and spin a thing and it even has some LED lights on there (which I don’t totally get cause you’re not typically playing with bubbles when it’s dark outside, so that’s probably part of the conspiratorial collusion here), but yo - ten? You would really, really think this thing could run on five max.
And you really shouldn’t even be making toys that require that many batteries without also giving a plug-in option. Like I’ll run an extension cord out to the yard, I don’t care. Batteries are expensive. Now if they last a couple of months, fine, but a few different dad’s replied to my tweets about it informing me that the batters will be dead by the weekend and the bubble maker will soon be a paperweight. Very sad.
In more positive news, the magic formula identified Rowdy Tellez like two weeks ago and now he’s the best hitter in the history of baseball - shout out me!
He posted the top JA score yesterday and launched himself into the top five on JA hitters for the season. But Jeimer Candelario actually bested him in barrels, barreling up three of them yesterday but not seeing any of them go for homers.
On the pitching side, I think Garrett Whitlock should be rostered in all leagues - he looked great as a starter yesterday, so go check your wire to see if he’s available.
One other thing to re-iterate: if you’re a paid subscriber of the notes and you have a specific data report you want me to develop & update daily, you can do that. Just yesterday I made two reports for subscribers based on some customizations they wanted to see (stats over certain time periods, or players that meet certain thresholds, stuff like that). If you have anything like that in mind, let me know! All it takes from me is writing a quick script to do it, and then it will refresh the data every morning and update the report.
