MLB Daily Notes: Thursday, August 25
Introduction / Explanation For New Readers
I have been reading the Politico Playbook most mornings recently, and today’s edition has some interesting stuff on the student debt stuff going on. It seems to me like a good portion of my readership here may be interested in this story, so I figured I’d share that here.
The thing that I think is important to know is that you shouldn’t be necessarily counting on this quite yet. There are plenty of questions about the legality of Biden doing this (Biden himself a few months ago said he probably doesn’t have the authority to do it… so that’s something!), so it’s possible that this gets challenged and struck down so you don’t actually get the forgiveness. That would require someone challenging it though, and I don’t think anybody wants to be that person - so it’s up in the air. Anyways, read the thing I linked to if you’re interested in all of that. I won’t give any opinions on the matter, but regardless of what I think about it - I’m happy for a lot of my friends who may be hugely benefiting here.
Cole Irvin went out and shoved against the Marlins going for eleven strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. He had an insane 27.2% SwStr%. That was the third-best single outing SwStr% of the season.
Top SwStr% Efforts of the Year, 90+ Pitches Thrown
Shohei Ohtani, May 5 vs. BOS: 29.3%
Robbie Ray, May 15 vs. NYM: 27.8%
Cole Irvin, Aug 24 vs. MIA: 27.2%
Patrick Sandoval, Aug 19 vs. DET: 26.8%
Corbin Burnes, July 6 vs. CHC: 26.0%
Irvin’s SwStr% for the year prior to this start was 10.1% - a really bad mark. Last night’s outing brought that up to 10.9% - a huge bump.
The craziest thing about this is that he threw his four-seamer 72.8% of the time for a 31.3% SwStr%:
For the year, he’s used his four-seamer 37.5% of the time and put up a 12.3% SwStr% with it. Now that’s a really good SwStr% for a four-seamer, so it appears that it is a pretty good pitch, but I mean 31.3% makes no sense. Only eight pitchers have thrown 30+ four-seamers in an outing this year and cleared a 30% SwStr% with it:
Top FOUR-SEAMER SwStr% Efforts of the Year, 30+ Pitches
Eric Lauer, Apr 30 vs. CHC: 37.8%
Robbie Ray, Jul 15 vs. TEX: 34.8%
Luis Castillo, Jun 28 vs. CHC: 33.3%
Eric Lauer, Jul 4 vs. CHC: 32.8%
Cole Irvin, Aug 24 vs. MIA: 31.3%
Reid Detmers, Aug 13 vs. MIN: 31.2%
Michael Kopech, Aug 12 vs. DET: 30.4%
Carlos Rodon, Aug 23 vs. DET: 30.4%
This comes a day after Zach Logue had a sweet outing against them, so things are getting ridiculous. The Marlins are hitting .198/.266/.323 this month with a 25.4% K%.
Here are their hitter stats for the month:
I have added the Marlins to the automated tweet thread that shows the probables for the next seven days against the league’s worst offenses:
Probably none of those guys are available to be picked up in your league, but you can find the update every morning around this time. The script checks matchups against the Athletics, Angels, Tigers, Pirates, Nationals, and Marlins.
I’ve cooked up quite a lot of automation this year and it’s been a blast - I hope people are enjoying and benefitting from it!
Other notable pitcher outings from yesterday:
Andrew Heaney kept it going with a 37.4% CSW% and a 22% SwStr% against the Brewers.
Shane McClanahan put that rough stretch further in the rearview with a 34.4% CSW% and 40.9% K% over his six scoreless. Was held to 90 pitches, has thrown 100 pitches just once since May 11th, and has thrown fewer than 95 in seven of his last nine.
Our guy Brayan Bello pitched well. Five innings, two runs, seven strikeouts, and one walk. His BB% is down to 10.3% now and the K% is up to 20.6% with a 66.7% GB%! Maybe someone to take a super-late round flier on next year.
Matt Manning was really good, again! Over his last four starts: 25 IP, 1.80 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 25.7% K%, 5.0% BB%
Manning may actually be worth an add for the stretch run:
He has a really great slider, as you can see there with the 24.4%/44.9%/47.4% line (SwStr/CSW/GB) - that’s what I like to see! The fastball has improved as well with a 10.2% SwStr% - that’s above average for a four-seamer, and he’s kept the barrel off of it. Nice to see the presence of three other pitches in the arsenal as well.
This kid was a highly touted prospect and had an elite season in the minors back in 2019. He’s still just 24, so plenty of upside there - definitely someone to get your hands on in dynasty/keeper leagues if possible.
And Lucas Giolito put up a good outing against Baltimore, much to my pleasure as I went back-and-forth on him in the home league and ended up starting him. It wasn’t very convincing with a 26.9% CSW% and a 10.8% SwStr%, I watched a good bit of it and he just doesn’t look very good. He needs to add some velocity to the fastball or something, I think it’s just not setting up his changeup well enough, which is his main weapon. I’m probably not starting Giolito against good teams moving forward, but the good news is that he doesn’t have to face many (if any) of those good teams over his last month of work.
On the hitting side, we can’t neglect to mention Oneil Cruz’s record-breaker. He hit a single at 122.4 miles per hour, the hardest-hit ball in StatCast history (that began in 2015).
It was the first ball even hit above 120 miles per hour this season, here are the top ten hardest-hit balls:
The only hitters to clear 118 this year: Stanton (6 times), Ohtani (twice), Cruz (twice), Schwarber, Judge
Cruz has now pushed the boundaries much further out on the max sprint speed vs. exit velo plot:
He is a unicorn, as the kids say. Unfortunately for the Pirates, his 38.7% K% is third-worst in the league for hitters with 200+ PAs.
Worst K% 2022, 200+ PA
Brett Phillips 41.8% (he was cut
Joey Gallo 38.7%
Oneil Cruz 38.7%
Joey Bart 37.7%
Chris Taylor 36.5%
Jorge Alfaro 36.2%
Jose Siri 35.7%
Brandon Marsh 35.7%
Franmil Reyes 35.1%
Patrick Wisdom 33.4%
The good news would have to be that he’s just 23 years old and has plenty of time to improve on this. I would imagine that being that freaking tall would make it tough to not have a very high strikeout rate, since there’s a lot more that has to happen physically to get the bat to the hitting zone.
Aaron Judge is the only recent comparison I can think of, at the same 6’7’’ as Cruz - and his career K% does sit at 29%. It’s down to 25% the last two seasons, but it took him five full seasons to get that rate to a manageable level under 28%. Cruz will still be useful for homers and steals, and should remain an everyday player for the Pirates for several years, but it’s an uphill battle I think in terms of him being a consistently good Major League hitter.
New Breakout Hitters piece is out, I wrote about Nate Lowe there - he’s been awesome this season and especially since June. The numbers in that piece don’t even include his homer yesterday, so everything has gotten even better. Check that out. I hesitate to use the word “piece”, I don’t know why, that’s pretty common lingo but it seems weird. Does make you feel a little bit more professional. I will be piecing together a ton of pieces over the last month of the season though as the RotoBaller staff has abandoned baseball to focus on football. Here’s my publishing schedule now:
Mondays: NOTHING
Tuesdays: DFS Premium
Wednesdays: DFS Premium
Thursdays: DFS Premium, Breakout Hitters
Fridays: DFS Premium, Hitter Streamers
Saturdays: SP Streamers, Starts & Sits
Sundays: SP Waiver Wire adds
With daily notes every day, and then we’ll have the few weeks of overlap with NFL stuff - and I have this full-time job thing as well as running my church’s website now and having two kids and still running and lifting, yikes! Feels good to be productive though!
Producer Lee and I are going to push out a few more podcast during the season, it’s been almost a month now, but as you can see I’m strapped for free time.
Here’s the offseason plan though. From October through February I’ll be going team-by-team doing reviews and previews for 2023. There will be one substack post per team (for premium members only!), and we’ll have 15 podcasts covering two teams at a time, giving a more high-level look at those PIECES. I will be conscious to leave some stuff out of the podcasts though to make the people not paying me to suffer.
Should be fun and informative and should put us way ahead of the field for drafts next season, so I hope you come along for the ride. Let’s finally get to the rest of the stuff:
