MLB Daily Notes: Tuesday, June 21
Introduction / Explanations for New Readers
Day #75 of the MLB season and the daily notes. I’m having the time of my life this season writing these notes and getting all the engagement and feedback on Twitter. For all of the (well-justified) poo-poo-ing of social media there is, it really is a great thing if you know how to use it right and you can control yourself. I really appreciate the following I have on there and it’s a lot of fun every day.
That seems to be a regular occurrence in life. Things and systems we have can be very good or very bad depending on how we humans use them. Everything in moderation, as they say. We are impressively capable of taking neutral things and turning them very bad given all of our propensity for over-indulgence. Is there even a single example of something out there that can’t be abused? You can drink too much water, you can exercise too much, and on and on. You can probably even love someone else too much, but maybe you could argue that one. It seems to me that most things are neutral, but humans are naturally depraved and likely to corrupt everything around us. We have to consciously engage in the fight against our sinful inclinations, but I don’t know I’m just spit-ballin here!
Franchy Cordero rocked out three barrels yesterday but didn’t get a single homer off of them. The guy hit balls at 99.5, 117.9, and 104.4 yesterday, here’s what that looks like in the savant dataset:
That second row was the 11th hardest-hit ball of the season:
We have seen Franchy be one of the top guys as far as exit velocity goes. He really is right up there with Stanton, Judge, and Ohtani as far as that kind of capability. He’s also quite fast, which makes him an insanely exciting player to watch. However, he’s 27 now and just hasn’t been able to do enough at the plate to stay in anybody’s lineup. This year he’s hitting .233/.308/.388 with a 12% Brl%, a 53% Hard-Hit%, and a respectable 25% K%. That last part is the most interesting since his career strikeout rate sits at 33%. If he were to be an everyday player with a 25% K%, I think he’d be a start-worthy guy for fantasy - so you could certainly add him in deeper leagues, but he’s not in the lineup every day right now - so we might just be one injury or demotion away from really having interest here.
Aces did the ace thing last night, as Gerrit Cole, Corbin Burnes, and Shane McClanahan all had spectacular outings.
The whiff leader on the day, however, was *gasp* Trevor Rogers:
He racked up 24 whiffs and seven strikeouts, but still didn’t throw enough strikes and had a couple of walks and five hard-hit balls, so it was another bad box score results. I’m sure he’ll have some really good starts moving forward mixed in with the bad ones if he can continue to put up whiff numbers like this. He could be a guy that is just a few adjustments away from being really good again, but for now I’d leave him on waivers in shallow leagues.

On the DFS side of things, I missed the cash line by a few points last night, once again getting torched by the Angels (played Trout & Ohtani for just 10 combined points). We could have also gotten their by going to Cole instead of McClanahan (12 point difference for just $200 more), probably should have been leaning that way given the differences in the matchup…
The tracker is updated. I’ve placed in the top half of lineups in the Relay Thrown all seven times so far, which I guess isn’t hard to do given that there are thousands and thousands of lineups in there with everybody chasing the top spot, but I feel pretty good about myself so far here. If we can just keep cashing at rate around 50% - the few big 5-10x splashes we’ll eventually get will make us profitable - I THINK. Fun to track, and we’ll certainly be playing tonight with this nice slate of games on Tuesday.
