MLB Daily Notes: Tuesday, June 28
Introduction / Explanations for New Readers
Nothing that happened yesterday made any sense. The Dodgers get shutout in Coors by Chad Kuhl (on seven whiffs, two barrels, and nine hard-hit balls), Jose Iglesias hits a home run, and some dude named Connor Seabold gets 21 whiffs while getting smacked around for nine hits and seven earned runs.
Needless to say, my DraftKings lineup got hosed (I played George Kirby and spent $14K on three Dodgers), I scored a whopping 38.6 points! So that’s good.
Noah Syndergaard led the way with a superb start, going for a big 19.4% SwStr% ont he slider and a bigger 26.7% mark on the changeup.
That was his highest slider usage of the season:
He must have just really had the feel for it, I doubt he keeps that kind of usage up with the pitch but it will be interesting to see. He may be available in some leagues given how bad he's been at times this year.
Kevin Gausman got away with mediocre marks on his splitter, throwing seven sparkling innings against the Red Sox. The 4-seam fastball was elite with a 17.5% SwStr% and a 43.9% CSW%. That hasn’t happened for him all season, so not a result to expect moving forward, but at least good to see that he can rely on the fastball a little bit if the splitter is completely gone.
At this point, I might be trying to ship away Gausman now that he has appeared to right the ship. I would still want a very, very good player in return - but if someone in your league values Gausman as a top-ten SP, I would take what they’ll give you for the guy - but I should just stop making recommendations like this at this point.
Garrett Cooper had a big day and is now hitting a great .316/.382/.463 with five homers, a 9.8% Brl%, a 23.3% K%, and an 8.0% BB%. He’s just such a solid hitter and should be rostered all over the place.
Luis Garcia also shows up near the top of the daily hitter leaders with three balls hit above 100 miles per hour
108.4 mile per hour line-drive double
104.0 mile per hour line-drive double
102.5 mile per hour line-drive single
That brings his season hard-hit rate to 41.3% to go with an 18.8% K%. The barrel rate is at 8.8% now, which is also pretty strong for a guy striking out this little.
Now too many hitters can maintain that low of a strikeout rate while hitting the ball so hard, so I’m pretty excited for Garcia moving forward. He’ll need to get more lift on the ball to see the homers come, but even without the homers he’s an elite batting average guy with RBI potential given that he’s moved up to the 5-6 hole in that lineup.
Had a fun conversation with @TorresTakes on the podcast last night, that will be up this afternoon so check it out when it comes!
