MLB Daily Notes: Tuesday, June 7
Introduction / Explanations for New Readers
We saw less baseball yesterday than any day since the season began.
A very sad day, made sadder by my very loud claim of a Christian Walker homer not coming to fruition. The well has dried up, and now I’m just another lame hot take artist.
I could, of course, lean on the crutch that the game was called after just seven innings - so Walker didn’t get a full shot at it. But the claim was specifically about him facing a four-seam heavy starter, so a late-game homer off the bullpen wouldn’t have really worked for my claim anyways.
A few people asked me how I found such a specific statistic, which made me realize that the entire fantasy baseball community isn’t using my MLB dashboard every single day - which is a true travesty. I don’t talk a ton about that Tableau dashboard, but that’s mainly because I don’t have a way to monetize is so I don’t really care all that much if people use it.
I will say this though, it absolutely 100% is the best fantasy baseball tool on the Internet. I’m cranking my own shaft a bit here, which is always a super lame thing to do, but in this case the shaft is pretty enough to get cranked.
The dashboard is here. It can answer almost any fantasy baseball question you can think of - and more. For this specific case, here’s how you’d see stats against four-seamers thrown by right-handed pitchers.
You can also do this by TEAM using the “Team O” tab and selecting whatever you want on the right.
I know the dashboard is a little bit overwhelming and doesn’t really look that great on mobile, but if you’re into baseball stats - it’s worth your time to get on a PC or a tablet and click around this bad boy for a while - it’s seriously an unmatched tool and it’s freaking free - which I’m super mad about! I can paywall these with Tableau Professional - but it is absurdly expensive. I would have to charge people $50/month+ to make any money off of it, and I’m sure almost nobody would pay that. So I don’t know, if any Tableau employees are reading this HIT ME UP, I’ll crank your shaft for a discount. Sorry I just took that joke too far.
The pitcher of the day was Hunter Greene, although there weren’t many other options. He is a very interesting fantasy case though, deserving of a closer look. Here’s how he threw his pitches last night (also from the MLB dashboard omfg!)
You can see he’s almost entirely four-seamers plus slider. He started the year throwing far too many four-seamers, but he’s ramped up the slider usage in recent starts (another plot from the same dashboard I just can’t be stopped!)
Both pitches are good
Four-Seamer: 13% SwStr%
Slider: 19% SwStr%
But when you can just sit on a four-seamer and be right 50% of the time (or much more than that if you’re ahead in the count), you’re going to hit this guy pretty hard when he’s not locating the pitches perfectly. All of this is to say that Greene is a solid pitcher that will have some great starts like this one, but he’s also going to have some bad ones when he doesn’t have the command.
Not much to talk about on the hitting side, but Eduardo Escobar has become useful again after a mediocre beginning to the year.
Since May 15th, he has hit .298/.319/.548 with four bombs and a 12% barrel rate.
Decent chance he’s available in your league now. He’s pretty boring, but he’s a solid bat eligible at multiple positions on a great offense.
So there you have it baby! Sixteen games today! Enjoy the rest of the notes!
