NFL Weekly Notes - Week 4
A weekly statistical summary of the most recent NFL week, brought to you every Monday and updated on Tuesday with the MNF game data.
I was driving for about 10 hours of my waking hours yesterday and was closing the door on a fantasy baseball championship, so I paid almost no attention to football. So this will serve as an exercise in catching up for me.
I think we need to have a closer eye on the plays run metric. You cannot score fantasy points without first running a play. So if a team runs into a week when they just don’t get many plays off, they are pretty much doomed from the beginning. Here’s the distribution of plays run so far this year:
Average: 65
25th Percentile: 59
75th Percentile: 71
Min: 43 (Bills week 2)
Max: 92 (Bears week 3)
There is some signal to this at the team level. Teams who play fast and have bad defenses will end up running more plays, and vice versa. But that doesn’t mean we can accurately predict this every week. There is a lot of randomness that goes into this. Any team can have a week where they just don’t get plays off, and we need to keep that in mind when evaluating for the future. So those numbers are good to store in your memory.

DAL vs. NYG
Keeping in mind what we learned at the top, we right away see that the Cowboys had a very strange game with just 50 plays run. I paid attention to this game, so I know that the Cowboys just didn’t have much opportunity in the second half after having a very nice first half.
I don’t see a ton to note here besides how concentrated this Giants passing game is. Malik Nabers (52 targets) and Wan’Dale Robinson (38) have two-thirds of the targets for the Giants. When they throw down field, they go to Nabers. When they throw short, they go to Robinson. Nabers is a top five WR, and Robinson is probably in the WR3 conversation in fantasy leagues right now.
The Cowboys aren’t a ton different. They are splitting the bakfield work between Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle, and when they’re throwing they are primarily looking to CeeDee Lamb and Jake Ferguson.

LAR vs. CHI
Another game without a ton of plays run. The Bears took advantage of a banged up Rams team and won this game. The pass game usage spiked majorly for D’Andre Swift as he went 7-72 through thea ir and even added 93 rushing yards. That was with Roschon Johnson taking seven carries and scoring on one of them. DJ Moore was the only other real factor with six targets and a 3-22-1 lne. I still don’t trust any pass catchers here with Williams and his season 5.5 YPA.
Since Kupp and Nacua have been out, the Rams have done this with their targets: Parkinson (12), Atwell (11), Whittington (11), Robinson (8), Kyren (6), Johnson (5).
The usage spiked for Jordan Whittington. He ran 31 routes to lead the team and saw eight targets for a really good 26% target share. He might worth an add in deeper leagues until Kupp or Nacua return. Williams suffered a bit from the slower game, but still got up to 23 touches, 100+ yards of total offense, and a touchdown.

NOR vs. ATL
The Saints had the ball most of the time here but lost by two points. Kamara and Olave played after being legitimately questionable. Rashid Shaheed saw a big 11 targets for an 8-83-0 line, and Chris Olave did most of the rest with 8-87-0 on his own. That still left seven catches and 19 rushes for Alvin Kamara, but he once again failed to have the massive game as Taysom Hill took two touchdowns from him. The offense is pretty concentrated to those three names (Shaheed/Olave/Kamara).
Drake London kept separating himself from the pack with 12 targets and a 13.7 ADoT. He is up to a 28% target share. Bijan Robinson fell pretty flat again with just 28 rushing yards, 46 receiving yards, and no scores. The offense is spread out to where Robinson’s floor is a bit lower than we thought it might be.

PIT vs. IND
Anthony Richardson missed most of this game to injury, and that allowed Joe Flacco to chuck it 26 times and win the game. That was good for the wide receivers as Pittman and downs both saw 9 targets and combined for over 200 receiving yards and a score (Downs). Both of those guys would get big production boosts if Flacco has to start in the future.
The Steelers were playing catch up for this entire game. They reached a season-high 62% pass rate, and Fields was pretty darn good with a 9.45 YPA and three total touchdowns. George Pickens saw 11 targets and went for 113 yards, while Pat Freiermuth had his first good game of the year at 5-57-1. Najee Harris was awful with a 13-9-0 line on the ground, but did add a long reception to get the receiving line to 3-54-0.

MIN vs. GNB
Jordan Love returned and threw for 389 yards and a wild 4:3 TD:INT. That’s a lot of action. He averaged a mediocre 7.0 YPA on 55 attempts. The targets: Wicks 13, Kraft 10, Doubs 8, Reed 8, Jacobs 6, Musgrave 3, Melton 3, Heath 2, Wilson 1. That’s a wide spread. Reed is the best receiver on the team and took a big 7-139-1 line down, which ended up murdering my own fantasy team - poor me.
The Vikings won this game though. Jordan Addison is back and grabbed a long touchdown to get a decent fantasy day with a 3-71-1 line. Justin Jefferson led the team with eight targets, but underwhelmed a bit at 6-85-1. Aaron Jones took 22 carries and four catches; his role is very strong. Darnold is now at the second-best 8.88 YPA in the league. The Vikings are good.

PHI vs. TAM
The Eagles were missing a ton of guys here, but the Bucs impressed nonetheless with a 33-16 win. The split the carries, giving Rachaad White and Bucky Irving ten each, and they both ran for the same 49 yards. White was the passing guy with 2-31-0 through the air on three targets. Mike Evans had the spike game this time with 8-94-1 on 14 targets. Chris Godwin still managed 6-69-0 of his own on nine targets. There’s not much to talk about with the Bucs, we know what they’re going to do.
Eagles targets without Brown or Smith: Goedert (8), Barkley (4), Campbell (4), Dotson (4), Ross (2), Stoll (2), Calcaterra (2), Gainwell (2). Goedert paced the team with 62 receiving yards. The overall struggles of the team brought Barkley down to earth, but he still managed 84 rush yards and 32 receiving yards - but Hurts took the rushing TD from him, so it wasn’t a big game for Saquon. The Eagles have a bye next week, so they’ll be full strength in the passing game after that.

CIN vs. CAR
This was a nice game for fantasy purposes. Andy Dalton wasn’t quite as good but still led the Panthers to three touchdowns. He has absolutely locked onto Diontae Johnson, who has 27 targets in these two games with Dalton, going 15-205-2 over that time. Xavier Legette had a game here with 6-66-1. Chuba Hubbard has 39 rushes to Miles Sanders’ 13 since Dalton took over. He has added nine catches on nine targets and a 9-72-1 line these last two weeks. Johnson and Hubbard are must-starts right now.
Joe Burrow went to Tee Higgins most often. Higgins had 10 targets for 6-60-1, but Ja'Marr Chase made more of his six targets with 3-85-1. Zack Moss took most of the rest of the targets with 4-27-1 on four targets. Moss did split carries with Chase Brown, who ran in two touchdowns on top of his 92 total yard (80 rushing).

JAX vs. HOU
The Jags fall to 0-4 here. Trevor Lawrence has just a 6.1 YPA this year with a 4:1 TD:INT in four games. Christian Kirk had 12 targets for 7-61-1, and Brian Thomas wasn’t bad himself at 6-86-1 on nine targets. The game scripts haven’t been in the favor of Travis Etienne, who has less than 275 total yards this season.
Without Tank Dell, it was indeed the Nico Collins show. He saw 15 targets for a 12-151-1 line. Massive day. Stefon Diggs had a 5-69-0 line behind him. Joe Mixon remained out, so they didn’t run the ball much - giving Cam Akers just 13 totes and no targets.

DEN vs. NYJ
Insanely ugly game here without a touchdown being scored. The Broncos ran just 54 plays. The Jets ran 70, but just could not move the ball with a 3.4 yards/play rate. The targets for the Jets: Conklin (8), Wilson (8), Lazard (8), Williams (5), Hall (5), Gipson (4), Ruckert (2), Allen (1). Really ugly stuff even a spot you thought the Jets would excel in.
Bo Nix had one of the worst games you’ll ever find at the QB position with 60 yards on 25 attempts. He targeted Courtland Sutton nine times, but connected only three times. Luckily for Sutton, one of those went for a score so his 3-60-1 line got it done in some fantasy leagues.
Weird game. Two untrustworthy teams, moving on!

A smash for the 49ers. They won this one 30-13. Brock Purdy threw it 27 times. He completed just 15 of those, but some big plays got him to 288 yards and a score. The targets were limited and spread out: Jennings (6), Samuel (5), Aiyuk (5), Kittle (4), Mason (3), Juz (1). Jordan Mason is getting the ball as much as he can handle, he went 24-123-1 on the ground.
The Patriots have no way to move the ball. Rhamondre Stevenson still got his 17 touches, but he averaged just 3.3 yards per carry.

The Commanders are popping. They won this game 41-14. Jayden Daniels went for a sick 84% completion rate with a 7.5 YPA. He’s now at an 81% completion rate with an 8.3 YPA on the year in addition to 218 rushing yards. He’s looking like a fantasy stud.
Brian Robinson Jr. got more usage, as expected. He went 21-101-1 on the ground and 3-12-0 through the air. Terry McLaurin is the primary target for Daniels, adding 7-51-1 to his season yesterday. That’s 16 targets and an 11-152-2 line over the last two games. Good stuff in DC.
On the Arizona side, they’re struggling a bit offensively. Marvin Harrison Jr. went just 5-45-1 on six targets, but it’s nice to see him with touchdowns in three straight games now. Michael Wilson took the most of the McBride targets, leading the team with seven, but going just 3-38-0. James Conner had a big rushing day with 18-104-1 on the ground, but his pass game role was limited to 1-9-0.

KAN vs. LAC
The Chiefs have lost Rashee Rice, so there will be some opportuny opening up. Yesterday’s targets: Kelce (9), Worthy (4), Gray (4), Hunt (3), Watson (3), Steele (3). Kelce led the team with 89 yards, and the Chiefs had a rare game under 20 points - but they did win by a touchdown. Carries: Hunt (14), Perine (5), Steele (2). Steele lost a fumble early on and got benched. If nothing else, we learned that the Chiefs will use Hunt. That whole backfield is hands-off, and all of the sudden we have Mahomes pretty much weaponless.
There wasn’t much fantasy goodness on the LA side. Ladd McConkey was the guy you were okay with as he grabbed a 5-67-1 line on his team-leading seven targets.

Ugly game here with the Raiders taking it 20-16 despite not having Davante Adams. Things are really ugly for the Browns. Deshaun Watson is at a pathetic 4.9 YPA with a 4:3 TD:INT on the year. That has brought everybody down. The standout yesterday was Jerome Ford who caught seven balls in addition to his ten carries, so he had a decent PPR game even without the benefit of a touchdown.
Without Adams, the targets went like this: Meyers (10), Tucker (6), Bowers (3), Bryant (2), White (1), Turner (1), Mattison (1)
After seeing 17 targets in weeks 1-2, Brock Bowers has just seven in the last two weeks, scoring 12 total fantasy points. He does not look like top-five tight end we thought he might be after those first two games.

BUF vs. BAL
The Bills fell flat here as the Ravens are clawing back from a slow start. Derrick Henry was the man of the match with a 24-199-1 line. Nobody else had to do too much, but Justice Hill had a nice 6-78-1 day out of the backfield. Mark Andrews did not get in the box score again, dropping his only target. You cant’ start that guy anymore.
On the Bills side, they could not get much going at all. Josh Allen had a rare scoreless game and was held to 180 passing yards. The targets went: Kincaid (7), Hollins (6), Shakir (5), Coleman (4), Samuel (2), Cook (1), Knox (1). Kincaid is the only Bills pass catcher you want to use, and Khalil Shakir is the other guy in deeper leagues. For the year, nobody has more than 18 catches or 20 targets. It’s ugly.
