NFL Weekly Notes - Week 5
A weekly statistical summary of the most recent NFL week, brought to you every Monday and updated on Tuesday with the MNF game data.
It was another Sunday of me not being able to pay much attention to football whatsoever. My family and I go to church every Sunday morning, and then we go out to lunch. Yesterday afternoon I got to play a baseball game with the men’s summer league team I’m on, and then I came home and we had people from our church over for dinner. So it was a busy day. And then to top it all off the Steelers game didn’t even start until 9:45. We really like the Steelers here, so that was a huge buzzkill. I went to bed in the second quarter.
My fantasy football team is also on the verge of being 0-5, so that’s hard to care about too. This Substack and DFS are the only things holding my interest in the NFL at all. But we’re back for another week. I will be using these notes as a way for me to catch up on what happened so I’m in better position to write the slate preview from Tuesday-Thursday. Let’s have at it, I will add my personal notes and findings on each game as we go through.

TAM vs. ATL
This was a crazy game, of which I did not watch - opting for Thursday baseball instead.
The Falcons got off 79 plays and Kirk Cousins was a beneficiary of that (he threw for 509 yard). It also allowed for 29 combined targets to Mooney (16) and London (13). There were even 17 left over for McLoud (9) and Pitts (8). Outlier game there for the Falcons, it’s not often you see 56 pass attempts. Bijan Robinson had a shockingly bad game given how many yards and points were posted. He went just 12-61 on the ground and 3-16 through the air. His 11% target share is fine, but not the elite territory where you’d want it. There are so many options on this offense, and Robinson is suffering.
There’s very rarely anything to say about on the Bucs side. They split the carries between Rachaad White (10-72-0) and Bucky Irving (9-44-0), and then they throw it a bunch of Mike Evans (7 targets) and Chris Godwin (6 targets). It was more of the same, but their offense has been very good this year. They’re a team that provides us very solid game environments to choose from.

NYJ vs. MIN
Fantasy owners are not very happy with Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson. Both of those guys went in the first round of most drafts. Aaron Rodgers went just 29/54 for 244 yards (4.5 YPA) and threw three interceptions. He’s not been very good this year, and that is holding everybody back significantly. There wasn’t much time for running the ball, with just 14 carries between Hall and Braelon Allen. Rodgers was locked onto Garrett Wilson. He earned 22 targets by my count, but turned that into a 13-101-1 line which is really good, but not quite what you might expect given 22 targets.
The Vikings stayed undefeated, although nobody had that great of a fantasy game. Sam Darnold has gotten the job done, no doubt, but he has not had as much success recently as he did early on. He averaged 9.7 YPA in weeks 1-2, but just 7.3 since then.

IND vs. JAX
The Colts are a much different team with Joe Flacco at QB, but I think it’s pretty clear that Richardson will take the job back next week. While Flacco is in there, Josh Downs and Michael Pittman are both solid WR2 or WR3 options. Downs has 21 targets and a 17-151-1 line in these last two games with Flacco. But with Richardson back, he’s probably not worthy of a starting spot in fantasy leagues.
Trevor Lawrence indeed got back to his more normal self. He threw for 371 yards on a sick 82% completion rate. The targets were spready: Thomas (8), Etienne (7), Davis (4), Kirk (4), Strange (4), Johnson (3), Farrell (2), Bigsby (1), Deguara (1). Tank Bigsby threatened Travis Etienne again with a 13-101-2 line, including a very long touchdown run. Etienne saw just six carries, but did go 6-43-0 in the passing game. There are a lot of mouths to feed in Jacksonville, and that makes them an unreliable place to go for fantasy points.

BAL vs. CIN
What a game this was. The Ravens took 41-38 in overtime, and there were a ton of fantasy points all over the place.
Both offenses are clear-cut. The Ravens want to run with Lamar and Henry, and when they are throwing - they’re looking for Zay Flowers (team-leading 39 targets) or a tight end (Likely has 21 targets, Andrews at 14). I don’t want to play anybody on the Ravens besides Jackson and Henry.
The Bengals want to throw, and it’s almost always to Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Both of them went off this week as the Ravens are clearly very much beatable through the air this year after being extremely tough on that front last year. It looks like Chase Brown might be the preferred ball carrier. He has 28-126-2 the last two weeks while Moss is at 24-75-0. But neither guy is a great fantasy starter while they’re splitting working given how often this team throws the ball to Chase & Higgins.

MIA vs. NWE
De’Von Achane got hurt here, and that allowed Jaylen Wright to grab 13 carries. Raheem Mostert was the primary ball carrier, taking it 19 times for 80 yards and adding two catches. If Achane misses time, Mostert is probably a guy you want to start - but it’s hard to love him since this team just isn’t scoring touchdowns without Tua. Tyreek Hill has gone 13-132-0 in three games since the Tua injury. That’s something he would routinely do in one game. If you used your first round pick on Hill, you’re screwed. Although a lot of people have been screwed by their first rounder this year, so maybe you’re surviving.
The Patriots continue to be terrible. There was some talk about Rhamondre Stevenson losing more and more of the job to Antonio Gibson, so we can check on that:
→ Stevenson: 12-89-1, 4-3-0
→ Gibson: 6-52-0, 1-4-0Still 67% of the work to Stevenson. Even 100% of the work isn’t all that valuable on this team, so you’re not loving Stevenson - but you can still start him as a flex guy for now.

Andy Dalton and the Panthers were solved by the Bears. Their yards per play this year:
→ 3.3, 3.3, 6.2, 5.4, 4.9
Those first two were with Bryce Young, and then they had the impressive week three with Dalton. But since then, Dalton has been slipping, and Young took over for him late in this game. It was a bust game for everybody but Chuba Hubbard. He’s been extremely good, but if Young is the QB again - that’s quite bad for him.
The Bears are looking better and better. Caleb Williams averaged an elite 10.1 YPA in this game with 304 yards and a 2:0 TD:INT. That’s his best work by far, so maybe he’s really figuring it out and making progress. The targets were very spread out with six guys getting multiple looks. But DJ Moore had the big game with 5-105-2 on eight targets.

CLE vs. WAS
I don’t have much to say here. The Commanders got it done again even against this tougher defense. Daniels was good again with the arm (9.5 YPA) and he added a team-leading 82 rush yards. Terry McLaurin turned eight targets into just four catches, but there was a long one in there so he reached the century mark again with 112 yards. He’s the only pass catcher you want for fantasy. Zach Ertz had eight targets but went 2-10-0 with them.

BUF vs. HOU
The Bills were missing Khalil Shakir here, and they struggled with just 4.5 yards per play. Josh Allen was awful, going 9/30 for just 131 yards. Keon Coleman had his first touchdown with a 49 yard grab, but that was his only catch of the day on five targets. It’s all pretty ugly for the Bills besides Josh Allen, and he has shown a pretty gross floor this year.
Nico Collins got hurt, but scored an early long touchdown. That allowed Stefon Diggs to lead the team in targets with 8 (6-82-0). Second was Dare Ogunbowale (6-57-0 on 7 targets). It’s just been a disaster season for Tank Dell who went just 4-38-0 here even with Collins missing most of the game.
Ogunbowale also added 15 rushes, so he took the Mixon role! That would be notable if we think Mixon will miss more time, but that is unlikely.

A dozen targets for Brock Bowers for a 8-97-1 line. That was nice to see after two duds, but this Raiders offense is gross.
Nothing was happening on the Broncos offense once again, but I guess you could say it was an encouraging result for Bo Nix. He threw two touchdowns with a 7.9 YPA. But you don’t want to start anybody on this team besides maybe Courtland Sutton or one of these RBs if one of them gets hurt.

The work on the 49ers side all went to Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle. They had 12 targets each and Aiyuk had the big yardage game.
Nothing really changed on either side here, both offenses went off pretty much as expected. Jordan Mason and Deebo Samuel showed us their floors. There are still a lot of capable playmakers on this team, which makes each individual piece a bit more volatile.

GNB vs. LAR
Josh Jacobs took back his job as primary ball carrier for the Packers. He took 19 carries for 73 yards and a score, while Emanuel Wilson went just 6-24-0. The Packers were really banged up in the passing game; here’s how it turned out:
→ Reed: 4-78-0 (6 targets)
→ Wicks: 2-20-0 (7 targets)
→ Kraft: 4-88-2 (5 targets)We didn’t get the passing volume we thought we might with this high game total. Love threw it just 26 times, and that held everybody down - but Kraft had the big game with the two touchdowns.
The Rams have a bye week next, and then they’ll likely get Cooper Kupp back. That takes away a lot of the value guys we have on this offense. This week:
→ Parkinson: 7-52-0 (13 targets)
→ Atwell: 6-58-0 (10 targets)
→ Whittington: 7-89-0 (10 targets)Double-digit targets for three guys. None of those three guys are explosive playmakers, so they all came up short of great games, but you’ll take all of those scores for how you acquired them (probably on the waiver wire). But it will all come to an end when Kupp returns.

NYG vs. SEA
The Seahawks lost this game, and that led them to take this pass rate thing to a new level. They threw it 88% of the time yesterday. There were only 11 rush attempts, and Geno Smith took 4 of them. That’s wild stuff. Kenneth Walker still had a decent game by adding 7-57-0 in the passing game, so that’s a sigh of relief for Walker owners.
JSN and Metcalf took seven targets each, but the yardage wasn’t great (JSN 31, Metcalf 55).
I do think Geno Smith is a viable fantasy starter now on volume alone. It’s crazy how much they’re throwing it. He leads the league with 200 pass attempts and 1,466 yards.
The Giants got it done without Malik Nabers. That was very surprising. Darius Slayton filled his that role well with an 8-122-1 line on 11 targets. As I predicted, nothing much changed for Wan’Dale Robinson who saw nine more targets but just a 6-36-1 line on those targets. Without Devin Singletary, Tyrone Tracy took 18 carries for 129 yards, but didn’t do much in the passing game with just one target. Daniel Jones is clearly not as bad as people thought he was after these last few tough years. The 6.3 YPA and 6:3 TD:INT isn’t great, but he’s clearly not at the bottom of the barrel in terms of NFL QBs.

DAL vs. PIT
A pretty ugly game here, as expected with the Steelers being involved. The Cowboys gave most of the work to Rico Dowdle. He went 20-87-0 on the ground and 2-27-1 through the air. Jalen Tolbert scored the other touchdown and went 7-87-1 on 10 targets. It was a disappointing game for CeeDee Lamb (5-62-0). The Steelers have done a great job shutting down WR1s this year.
Justin Fields was getting a lot of credit and hype from Steelers fans this week, but he gave them less reason for that this week with his 5.0 YPA and just 27 rush yards in a losing effort despite the Cowboys missing their key defensive players. There is not a single soul on this Steelers offense you really want to start in fantasy.
