Recent Pitcher Data Analysis - April 18th
Looking into early pitcher data to spot buys and sells at starting pitcher
I developed this post series last summer after I left other sites and brought all of my work exclusively here. My idea was to post an iteration of some post series every weekday. That didn’t quite materialize, but I still have the scripts and the formatting and everything, so let’s roll into it again.
We are three full weeks into the season now, so we have the data we need to look at what we want to look at for pitchers. I’ll go through this bad boy slowly at first to make sure it’s clear what we’re looking at, and we’ll get into some specific pitchers more deeply today since I have some extra time.
First, we start with the most important thing - strikeout rate leaders. This post is meant to look at “recent data” so we can spot changes, but in this case, “Last 3 Weeks” just means the entire season (yes I included those first two Korea games as well). Anywhere you see a comparison, it’s comparing 2024 to all of 2023.
Last 3 Weeks - Leaders
K%
Freddy Peralta: 39.4 K%
Jared Jones: 36.4 K%
Bobby Miller: 36.0 K%
MacKenzie Gore: 35.4 K%
Garrett Crochet: 35.2 K%
Reid Detmers: 34.9 K%
Joe Ryan: 34.3 K%
Yusei Kikuchi: 33.0 K%
Luis Gil: 32.8 K%
Hunter Greene: 32.6 K%
Yoshinobu Yamamoto: 31.8 K%
Ryan Pepiot: 30.8 K%
Dylan Cease: 30.0 K%
Zack Wheeler: 30.0 K%
Cole Ragans: 29.9 K%
The story of the young season at SP has been Jared Jones. But I think we’ve said enough about him already. He looks like one of the best pitchers in the entire league and he should be 100% owned even if he is going to be limited to five innings more often than not.
If it weren’t for Jones, we would be talking a lot more about Garrett Crochet, who entered the White Sox rotation this year and hasn’t done much wrong to start the year.
Strong fastball, great slider, and overall beautiful numbers across the board. I have some doubts about his ability to maintain it given that he threw all of 25 innings last year (Jones threw 126 by the way), but for now he’s a must-start pitcher.
It’s pretty weird to see Aaron Civale here, especially after you see his 10.8% SwStr% and 47% Strike%. Both of those numbers would imply a K% below 23%, so I have serious doubts on him maintaining a good K%.
The overperformance is real with Yusei Kikuchi as well, as you see him with a sub-13% SwStr%.
Reid Detmers is flirting with a breakout season early on with an elite 26.7% K-BB% in the early going. That strong performance is backed up by a great 52.2% Strike% and 34.9% Ball%, so much more believable on this front. That said, we’ve seen Detmers have elite runs in the past and he hasn’t been able to maintain it. I’d consider selling him on that point if someone will give you an SP2-SP3 for him.
Here are your walk rate leaders:
BB%
Tanner Houck: 1.9 BB%
Zach Eflin: 2.0 BB%
Kyle Muller: 2.1 BB%
George Kirby: 2.2 BB%
Jared Jones: 2.3 BB%
Dean Kremer: 2.8 BB%
Cody Bradford: 2.8 BB%
Joe Ryan: 2.9 BB%
Brandon Pfaadt: 3.0 BB%
Freddy Peralta: 3.0 BB%
Emerson Hancock: 3.0 BB%
Luis Castillo: 3.1 BB%
Nick Martinez: 3.2 BB%
Shota Imanaga: 3.4 BB%
Jack Flaherty: 3.8 BB%
Tanner Houck is a surprise here. For his career he’s posted a league-average walk rate of 8.2%, so this is a huge surprise. Nobody, not even George Kirby himself, can maintain a 2% walk rate for long, so there will be more walks for Houck and that will obviously hurt him and his sub-2.00 ERA.
Extremely good to see Jack Flaherty here, and that’s backed up by a very good 33.8% Ball%. He has a fantastic 21.5% K-BB% this year but the ERA is bloated at 4.91 by a 1.5 HR/9. The SIERA is strong a 3.07, so overall I’m encouraged by the start from Flaherty, and he’s someone that is available in plenty of leagues.
The pitchers here with a K% above 25%: Houck, Jones, Ryan, Peralta, Imanaga, Flaherty
The third component to my original “Pitcher Magic Formula” is ground ball rate. It’s not nearly as important at K% and BB%, but I do like it as tiebreaker. A high GB% does slightly correlate with a lower ERA, since you can’t give up a home run on a ground ball. Here’s your top 15:
GB%
Ranger Suarez: 63.5 GB%
Cristopher Sanchez: 62.7 GB%
Marcus Stroman: 61.3 GB%
Max Fried: 60.3 GB%
Luis Severino: 59.0 GB%
Brady Singer: 58.6 GB%
Jordan Hicks: 58.1 GB%
Keaton Winn: 56.7 GB%
Michael Soroka: 56.1 GB%
Paul Blackburn: 54.9 GB%
Reese Olson: 52.9 GB%
Trevor Rogers: 52.3 GB%
Tanner Houck: 52.1 GB%
Dakota Hudson: 51.8 GB%
Tommy Henry: 51.6 GB%
Really good to see Cristopher Sanchez here. He’s having a great start to the season with a 27.2% K% and an 8.7% BB%, and the ERA has landed at 2.53. The WHIP is a bit high (1.31), which isn’t shocking to see given that a lot of ground balls go for hits and the walk rate is a tad high. I don’t think Sanchez is going to be an ace this year, but he’s a solid arm and you’re certainly happy with where you got him in the draft.
Now we get into some more unique stuff, my magic formulas:
K%, BB%, GB% Magic Formula
Cole Ragans: 29.9 K%, 6.2% BB%, 44.3% GB%
Corbin Burnes: 27.2 K%, 4.3% BB%, 49.2% GB%
Garrett Crochet: 35.2 K%, 4.5% BB%, 44.2% GB%
Ranger Suarez: 28.4 K%, 4.2% BB%, 63.5% GB%
Tarik Skubal: 28.3 K%, 5.4% BB%, 48.3% GB%
Zack Wheeler: 30.0 K%, 5.0% BB%, 48.4% GB%
What we look at here is
K% > 27%
BB% < 7%
GB% > 44%
The criteria is a little bit arbitrary, but this thing has treated me very well through the years - it’s a great tool to spot breakout SPs. There isn’t anybody wildly available this time besides maybe Ranger Suarez. He’s had a great go of it to start, but it’s harder to believe with him since we’ve seen him in the league for so long without him ever doing anything great over the long-term. His Stuff+ is still low at 74 as well, so this looks a bit like a lucky start to the year (12.3% SwStr%).
The newer magic formula is the SwStr% and Ball% formula. I really like pitchers who can get a bunch of whiffs without relying on getting chases. You want guys throwing pitches in the strike zone but still getting swings and misses. Here they are:
SwStr% + Ball% Magic Formula
Chris Sale: 14.6 SwStr%, 30.6% Ball%
Graham Ashcraft: 14.6 SwStr%, 33.3% Ball%
Jack Flaherty: 15.3 SwStr%, 33.8% Ball%
Jared Jones: 23.3 SwStr%, 25.2% Ball%
Joe Ryan: 15.0 SwStr%, 27.7% Ball%
Nathan Eovaldi: 16.4 SwStr%, 33.8% Ball%
Ryan Feltner: 16.7 SwStr%, 33.1% Ball%
Tarik Skubal: 16.1 SwStr%, 29.7% Ball%
Tyler Anderson: 14.6 SwStr%, 31.8% Ball%
Zack Wheeler: 16.2 SwStr%, 32.4% Ball%
Validation for the amazing starts for Jones and Ryan, some of your known aces here, but also some pretty interesting names.
Flaherty: Good to see him here, I would be buying on Flaherty right now.
Anderson: He’s been a super weird pitcher for years now, having really nice runs along with really terrible stretches. I’m a no thanks on him for now but you can use him as a streamer in good spots.
Eovaldi: Pitches a lot like an ace when he’s healthy, and he’s healthy now. I would be jumping at an opportunity to sell high on him though.
Feltner: He’s putting up some eye-popping numbers early on, but he’s super deep leagues only given the whole Rockies thing.
Ashcraft: He’s getting a lot more whiffs this year on the cutter (14.5% SwStr%) and slider (18.7%), so this is a very good sign. He is a ground-ball pitcher as well, which helps a ton in Cincinnati. I’m close to buying in, but I need to see a few more good starts first just given how bad he was at getting strikes in his first two seasons.

Here’s a long list of the biggest pitch usage changes. It’s a lot longer than it will be in the future since we’re talking about a whole rollover of a season rather than an in-season adjustment. I’m not going to comment on it, but here’s the full list so at least you have the information if it interests you:

I am not going to give the velo decreases here. It’s a huge list since we’re dealing with a lot of
Relievers turned into starters
Cold weather games
Guys still ramping up
So most of it is noisy so far, it’s much more interesting to see that in-season since it can suggest some pitchers that might not be completely healthy.
So that’s how this post will go when I put it out. I think I’ll post it every week, I just might not always deliver extra commentary with it if I’m strapped for time.
It’s free this week so people can see what’s up, but in the future it will be behind the paywall. Thanks for checking it out!
