I would say Max Scherzer is back. 17 strikeouts to a single walk in his last two starts. Three SwStr% above 19% in his last four, proceed as you would normally with him!
Chris Sale was rolling again before an injury took him out after 59 pitches. They’re calling it left shoulder soreness - not what you want to see! That would make the Red Sox rotation look like this:
James Paxton
Brayan Bello
Garrett Whitlock
Tanner Houck
?
I’d guess Kluber would just slide right back in there since he hasn’t really been in the bullpen role yet.
The Pablo Lopez season has been a pretty bumpy ride after an elite start to the year.
He’s been pretty inconsistent with the whiff counts.
The numbers are still pretty great for the year, so just keep chugging along starting him every time.
Reid Detmers struggled again. Every once in awhile he goes for one of these insanely good starts and that gets everybody excited about him again, but it also makes people overlook how mediocre he’s been overall.
He’s really only had the one great start this year, with three other “good/fine” ones, and there have been five pretty bad ones. He still sports a strong 14.5% SwStr% and a 26.4% K% without a horrible walk rate at 9.3%. Clearly there is still upside here and he’ll probably pop off for a couple more of those 25+ bombs, but I don’t think he’s really someone you want to start in a 12-team league.
Let’s talk about Barrels for a bit. Just a reminder what a barrel is, technically:
A ball must be hit above 97mph to qualify as a barrel, and there is a dynamic angle range they must fit into to earn the classification as well. It was an ingenious invention by whoever came up with it, and it’s a great stat to use for hitters.
I have developed this “Barrel Performance” spreadsheet that tracks some stuff. It looks at
Total Barrels
Barrel Rate (Brls / Balls In Play)
HR/Brl (What % of your barrels have gone for homers)
Barreled HR (count of barrels that went for a homer)
Barreled Non-HR (count of barrels that didn’t go for a homer)
Average barrel distance
The most interesting thing to look at is the HR/Brl. The league average for that is around 50% - so you have a 50/50 chance for the ball to go over the fence if you barrel it. This changes in different parks, of course, but a decent general rule is anybody way above or below 50% is due for some regression moving forward.
Here are the raw barrels leaders:
Here are your lowest HR/Brl (filtered to players with at least 15 barrels):
Players that spray their barrels around the park will perform worse in this. A barrel to center or opposite field is less likely to clear a fence, so we should really consider pull rates in this. Regardless, I don’t think an 18% HR/Brl is something that is sustainable, so it’s good news for the players at the top of this list.
Conversely:
What we see here are some of the game’s hardest swingers. Since there is no classification above barrel (there is the invented blast, but it is not one of the six that we use typically), we can’t really say all barrels are created equal. In the case of, say, a flare - we can say that flares are basically all created equal because there’s a lower and upper bound on it. With barrels, there’s no upper bound - so some of these guys are really going to be in another class with their barrels. That’s obviously true with Alonso, Ohtani, Schwarber, Judge etc - a barrel off the bat of those guys is going to be hit harder and further than the average barrel cause these guys are so freaking yoked.
Muncy is overperforming, probably, but he does pull the ball a ton - so that helps. He should be expected to be over 60% for sure, but I’m not real sure if 76% can stay around for much longer.
Looking at the guys with the most non-homer barrels:
This is going to be biased toward the players with a bunch of barrels overall. You can’t get a non-HR barrel without a barrel, so it’s no surprise that these guys are mostly above 25+. But Chapman has been unlucky since the first week of the season and that just won’t seem to stop, it’s pretty wild to see.
One more thing let’s check the average distance leaders:
and the lowest:
It’s a good resource to check every once in awhile, and it’s available to paid subs.
Here’s an update on the biggest Stuff+ increases for SPs:
This is another paid sub resource that refreshes once a week or so, it depends on when Drew gets to updating the Stuff+ results. It’s a real shame what happened to Rasmussen, but some other notable names here
Liberatore (he’s added 1.5 mph to the four-seam and almost 3 mph to the sinker this year)
Varland (added velo to the fastball as well)
Valdez sinker
Musgrove cutter
Strider/Wheeler/deGrom fastball (as if they needed it…)
The link to that sheet is in the resource glossary, I changed it this morning to only show pitchers that have made 2 starts this year to get rid of a lot of the RP noise.
I see Jake McCarthy showing up in the paid section of the notes below as a recent improver. Let’s take a look at his stats before and after the demotion.
Before:
After:
Results have been way better but the xwOBA has gotten worse. He has a 65% GB% since returning, so that’s really not good.
We’ll wrap it up there, these sections will hopefully be a bit better next week after my vacation time ends (I work way harder when on vacation with these three kids).
