Paid subs get yet another new resource to use today! It’s called SP Next 2 Starts SOS, which means strength of schedule.
Basically, the script goes through every pitcher and grades their next two matchups, and then ranks them in a Google Sheet. It runs automatically every morning so it’ll be up to date by the time you get these notes, here’s a preview:
And yes, I did split the Rockies and Reds to grade differently based on where the game is being played - but those are the only two teams I did home/road splits with since there really aren’t any other extreme parks at this point in my judgment at least.
The link to access to the full file is in the Resource Glossary and will be below the paywall moving forward.
It’s a very light day of baseball today, but we had a full slate of games yesterday. I’m working up something else for the blog today and publishing a new dashboard tab that I think will be very interesting, so that will be in your inboxes soon.
Cristian Javier led the day in points and whiffs, but that’s not very interesting. Good to see him having some strong outings after some K% and SwStr% downers early on, but what more is there to say?
Eduardo Rodriguez did it again. Seven strong innings, 8:2 K:BB, 13.1% SwStr%, he’s been very good. If I had him, however, I would probably be looking to jump ship just because he’s never been a trustworthy SP. He’ll go on runs of dominance but then end up having very bad stretches as well with walks and a loss of command. I guess we should note that most of that stuff in my head about him is from the BC (before Covid) era. The guy has hardly pitched since 2020, so I don’t know - do what you want with him, beats me.
Edward Cabrera did Edward Cabrera things with a 13% SwStr% and a 37% CSW% but four walks and four earnies allowed in 3.1 innings. That’s what you get from the guy, you’ll have to just live with it!
The most interesting man of the day may have been Brayan Bello with his best start of the season, going six innings and giving up two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking just one. The story with him is that he gets a ton of ground balls, and has the ability to get a good amount of strikeouts, but has always walked a ton of hitters and that causes him problems. So far this year he has a 22% K% and an encouraging 5.5% BB%, so that’s good to see:
Sub-par SwStr% on his main two pitches which account for 60% of his pitch arsenal. He needs to figure out some way to set up that changeup more often because that’s a real devastating pitch for him, but your changeup is often only as good as your fastball allows it to be. He should be rostered in most leagues at this point though, the GB% helps a lot, and if he really keeps the walk rate below the league average he’s going to have plenty of success.
The JA algorithm really likes him, making him the #4 pitcher of the season so far. That’s pretty wild. I do like to reward ground balls, and Bello has the SwStr% going as well at 13% for the year.
Only 7 SPs have generated GB% above 60%, and Bello ranks behind only Fried in SwStr% of that bunch. Plenty of ceiling for Bello.
Kevin Gausman added on some velocity in his bounce-back start after a disaster last week.
You see the difference there in the last two starts.
5/4: 92.6mph, 2202rpms, 2% SwStr%
5/10: 96.1mph, 2358rpms, 10% SwStr%
That velo jump is really wild to see. Maybe he was just pissed or something. Somebody investigate his Instagram and see if he might have just gotten dumped or something.
Josiah Gray had a solid start and he continues to tinker with his pitch mix. He gave the cutter center-stage yesterday:
That led to a bad 7.5% SwStr% on the day with three strikeout sand four walks. I take it back, this wasn’t a good start, he was pretty fortunate to get out of there with only two runs and five hits (he did generate a season-high 13 ground balls though, so maybe that’s something the cutter can do as well)
His cutter only has a 44% GB% on the year, so I don’t know - my head is all over the place with him. He continues to change things and give us confusing results. Good for him for trying new things but I don’t really wanna talk about the guy anymore!
How about Lance Lynn, is he driving you all crazy? Seven more earnies yesterday. He’s given up four or more earned runs in each of his last five starts and has a 7.51 ERA right now, just devastating fantasy teams this year.
But can we quit him? No! He has an 18.4% K-BB% and a 14% SwStr%. And over his last four starts, the walk rate has been just 7%. He’s doing everything seemingly okay, just suffering from a bunch of dingers allowed. He’s given up a homer on 77% of his barrels allowed, the league average is 48%. Here’s a sneak peek at the new dashboard tab which I will explain in the post later today:
Here’s where you can see those numbers compared to the league averages. Hitters have an .803 wOBA on his most-commonly allowed batted ball type (the flare, which softer line drives), and the league average on that same type is just .640. That’s certainly not a skill thing, and it’s just random bad luck for him that so many of those are falling in.
Lynn remains a buy-low candidate, and I’m positive he can be had for quite cheap now, I recommend you go try to get him!
Alright, that’s it for the write-ups today. Enjoy the rest of the report!
