Lots of new stuff coming this week on the sports betting side, so keep an eye out for that. Several people have been telling me they have been using my projections for betting (mostly player props) and have been having success. Now, never trust a gambler - but in this case, I at least really want to believe them - and it’s not the most ridiculous thing to believe.
The daily projections are pretty good, I will say that. It’s not impossible to think that I might have a projection model that can beat the sports books in some areas, so we’ll go ahead and put that to the test. Again, more on all of this later - but for now, let’s just stick what the stuff we usually get into.
Mitch Keller my oh my! These last five starts:
He leads the league in K-BB% since April 26th with a 37.5% K% and a 2.9% BB%. He is really doing it!
He is getting the strikeouts with a ton of called strikes, and I would be lying if I said that didn’t make me a little bit uneasy about this run of his.
Called Strike % Leaders
Rich Hill 21.2%
Brady Singer 21.0%
Logan Webb 20.5%
Mitch Keller 20.3%
Zach Eflin 20.0%
Getting called strikes can be a skill. Brady Singer, for example, always generates a high Called Strike rate. That’s good news for Keller.
You can see from that plot above that he is on the extreme of CS% and has a green CSW% as well, so overall things are okay. But we can’t ignore this bad SwStr% he has under 12%.
He’s the only pitcher in the league with a K% above 30% and a SwStr% below 12%:
I am not saying Mitch Keller is not actually a very good pitcher now, I think he is. The arsenal is great, he keeps hitters off balance and he’s locating everything very well. I just think there’s likely a good amount of K% regression coming, although it’s also possible that will be offset by some easier matchups as we move forward, because he has faced some really good lineups this year.
I would still absolutely trade Keller for an established ace/very good pitcher, that’s just how I always go about things here. So if you can pull something like that off, I would say do it.
Hunter Brown led the day in whiffs with 19. It’s been a bit of a bumpy ride for him this year:
He also has a SwStr% under 12%, but the K% matches at 25%.
Coming into the year I profiled him as a guy that would likely have a good year because of the stuff being very good and the GB% being reliably high. I did have some questions about the K%, so the 25% mark is not surprising at all.
He does have this splitter that would generate a ton of whiffs, but as you can see there he’s not super confident with it - classic splitter problems! The slider and curveball are going to need to tick up in the SwStr% for him to really enter the ace realm, and I don’t know if he can do that this year. The GB% being at 53% is good, but I was really thinking it would be closer to 60%. Maybe I was just dumb for thinking that, but overall a guy with a 16% K-BB% and a 52% GB% doesn’t get me overly excited.
He’s super young and talented though, we must say that, but I think for right now he’s just a “solid” fantasy pitcher rather than a very good one.
Braxton Garrett is underrated. He is available in plenty of leagues and that one absolute disaster start against the Braves where he was just hung out to dry has a lot to do with that, I suspect:
The stuff:
The K-BB% is 22%-4%, which is actually worse than I expected. The 12.1% SwStr% isn’t exciting either, so maybe this guy isn’t actually underrated. I’m talking myself out of this. We do things live here. The Stuff+ numbers on him are also awful, for those of you who care about that:
These are the kinds of things that make me not want to trust Stuff+. He’s down there with Eduardo Rodriguez and Bailey Falter. I don’t know.
He has been throwing this cutter a lot more recently:
So that is something to note. When a pitcher adds a new pitch and starts throwing it more than a quarter of the time, you could argue that really they are just a brand new pitcher at that point and you should pretty much re-evaluate them. That’s probably going too far, but it’s something to note.
Overall, Garrett confuses me and I don’t know what to do with him. I wouldn’t trust him in shallow leagues, that’s what I can say for now.
Clarke Schmidt got worked, sorry about that - I was pretty into him for the two starts last week. Still put up a solid 14% SwStr% yesterday but didn’t have much command. He’s a very frustrating pitcher to roster, so leave him for deep leagues right now as well.
Christopher Morel hit another homer, and he’s carried his 2023 success on from AAA to the Majors since his call-up last week. The Cubs have a couple of young players of interest to us.
Morel with the 29% K%. That’s no surprise, but it is good to see it under 30%. You can manage that if you have a ton of raw power, which Morel would seem to have. The 71% Contact% is also pretty solid.
The problem is that both of these numbers are better than what he was doing in the minors (31% K%, 65% Contact%), so I would expect things to get worse. Again, you can survive that with the power he has, but I would be looking to sell high if you get the chance.
As for Mervis, it’s been a bad start. No homers, a low Brl% and a horrifying 41% K% and 59% Contact%. It’s only 34 PAs, but if he’s still sitting with anything close to these numbers in a week I would be benching him and probably dropping him in redraft leagues.
Alex Kirilloff had a big weekend, and now he’s at an 11.8% Brl% and a 15% K% (that number excludes his pitch clock strikeout). His contact rate is also way up at 84%. This is the kind of stuff he did last year when healthy, a high barrel rate and a high contact rate at the same time. If any hitter is above a 10% Brl% and an 80% Contact% over a significant sample, that pretty much tells you they’re one of the better hitters in the league - and I really do think that Kirilloff is one of the better hitters in the league, it’s just a question about whether or not his wrist can hold up.
Trigger warning I’m about to talk about Marcell Ozuna so you can close the browser now if that worries you.
This month:

There’s no guarantee this dude doesn’t completely fall apart starting like right now. That’s just who he has been for the last several years, and it’s not like the Braves are going to hesitate to bench him if he’s struggling again, but for right now he’s humming along and should be started.
Update on the K Prop tracking, if we bet every line last week where the K projection was bigger than the line by at least one whole strikeout, we would have gone 17-10 for a +4.41 unit profit. That’s cool.
Again, much more betting stuff coming for paid subscribers, so if that is your cup of tea - subscribe today! But please don’t take me too seriously and be careful out there, it’s a dangerous game to play.
On to the rest of the report, thank for being here!
