We finally got that Lance Lynn bounce-back game. It came against the Guardians his SwStr% was actually down for the day, but he threw a bunch of quality strikes (no walks) and got the job done. I have been riding Lynn every time out all year because of the K-BB% he has maintained, so it was nice for it to finally pay off. Let’s hope it can continue.
Zack Wheeler got BABIP’d to death in a way you rarely see. He gave up nine hits and four earned runs but everything else was just beautiful with a 19.8% SwStr%, 8:1 K:BB, and a .270 xwOBA allowed. Just a bunch of weak hits falling in. Here is his page from the “Pitcher BIP Analysis” tab using just yesterday:
So he gave up the one barrel and it was caught. Hitters went 5/5 on their flares (softer line drives) and 2/5 on their topped balls (ground balls), and someone even got a hit on a ball hit below 60 miles per hour. Tough luck for Wheeldaddy!
Let’s have a gander at Brandon Williamson, who threw 5.2 strong innings in Coors. He gave up one run on a homer with six strikeouts and two walks.
That is one slow cutter, and the four-seamer doesn’t have much juice either. The average velo of a cutter league-wide is 88.9 miles per hour, so he’s 2.7 ticks below that. He still generated a fine SwStr% on it - but we’re only talking about a few swings here so let’s take it easy. He wasn’t very good in the minors this year (16.4% K%, 12.1% BB%), so I’m not adding him anywhere, but hey - he hit a K prop for us!
I think we can probably just cut bait with Seth Lugo. He’s been getting by this year despite some bad K% and SwStr% numbers, but he didn’t get away with much yesterday as the Royals teed off on him. He now has an 8.1% SwStr% which is in the bottom-ten of the league among qualified SPs, and his 15.2% K-BB% is falling. He’ll probably still give you some quality starts and wins as we go forward, but the swing-and-miss just isn’t there so I’m off of him.

Triston Casas had two more barrels yesterday and now has a .485 xwOBA this month. That’s a 20.7% Brl% with an 18.2% K% and a 15.9% BB%. He only has three homers to show for it this month, but he’s swinging the bat very well. Only Judge, Robert, and Acuna have higher xwOBA marks than him in May.

I have to make fun of this Luis L. Ortiz dude. Pirate bro’s were very upset at the Pirates for not taking him out of Spring Training, and he’s made them look pretty dumb since he was recalled to fill in for Velasquez.
Remember that sometimes I am a Pirate bro, but not always. I exclusively reserve the right to jump on and off the wagon as I please and I have immunity from any criticism.
Here is his outing on my sloppily-drawn pitch plotting tool from the main MLB dash:
I mean the guy looked like a jerk on some of these pitches. Seemingly releasing the ball like 7 seconds late and just ripping it into the stands. Bad! The Pirates got shutout by the Tigers 4-0 and it took like 45 minutes, I miss the old days of April when I was riding the wagon.
There are three Rays on the last 3 weeks barrel leaders, and Jose Siri is one of them. Their team 11.4% Brl% is second to only Atlanta. They have eight players with an above-average Brl%:
To me, it’s even more impressive than Atlanta because Atlanta just has a bunch of Hulking Adonis’s in their lineup. The Rays really don’t have, they just have dudes that know how to hit the ball at the right angle and velo. Arozarena, Lowe, Raley, Bethancourt, and Siri? Ridiculous! It makes me want to believe that I can get a ball into the outfield at my next baseball game on Sunday, maybe I’ll wear my Glasnow shirt under my jersey to channel that.

Ibanez and Baty and Casas, oh my! Some of these dudes are probably available in your shallower leagues, and in fact, my guy Nick in home league just dropped Baty! Wow!
We know that Baty murks the ball (114 max velo already in the Majors), and the guy has just a 19% K% right now. He has five barrels and six strikeouts this month, sign me freaking up - thanks Nick!
Here’s a picture of he and I from high school when we were on TV at a Pirate game and we thought that was soooooo cool.
That’s me going full Adidas. I think I wore that hoody like 60% of the time in high school and I didn’t wear a single pair of jeans until I was like 23.
Xavier Nady hit two balls foul into the right field bleachers in a row right at us. We didn’t get either ball, but they came at us right in a row and that camera shot was taken after we failed to get either ball.
Clearly, this was a seminal moment in our lives, getting on TV for 3 seconds like that just as thousands of other people do at every other sporting event every single day. I’ve never been the same.
I have more to say, but it’s time to go.
Game previews will be out around 11 or so today with some early action going down. Those are a big hit, I think, so check them out later if you missed it the last few days!
