What a day for some interesting/unexpected pitching performances! Let’s run through them all.
A dozen strikeouts! That will make us not care much at all about the three walks, but there were three more walks there. He posted a 17.3% SwStr and he struck out half the batters he faced.
Most of the whiffs came on the forkball, here’s the season pitch mix to this point:
Overall that’s a pretty high CSW% given his 14% BB%. The BB% is down to 11.4% in May, so that’s movement in the right direction, but still too high. If he can get close to 10% or so maybe that’ll work fine since he is striking out a lot of hitters (29% for the year, 33% this month). He’s going to be a frustrating pitcher to start in fantasy, but I am guessing a lot of people are kicking themselves this morning for dropping him or benching him in that tough matchup last night.
Figured we would just stick to the new-ish pitchers with walk problems but nasty stuff. Bello walked five in five innings last night but struck out seven to have himself a pretty decent fantasy outing. He had 19 whiffs and an 18% SwStr%. For the year, his K% is 23.8% and the BB% is actually decent at 9%. The SwStr% is strong at 14% and the GB% is way up there at 62%.
I like Bello a lot and would be starting him moving forward. The strikeouts and the grounders can overcome the walks, and overall we hadn’t really seen a walk problem for him prior to last night. The Red Sox also gave him a vote of confident by sending Nick Pivetta to the bullpen, so he survived the first cut. There is probably one more cut to come in the next two weeks with Whitlock on his way back, so we will see what happens there - but I like Bello’s chances.
I pre-emptively highlighted Bradish two days ago and he made me look good! He pitched very well against the Angels with 6.2 innings of one-run ball, five strikeouts and no walks. The SwStr% was down at 10.6%, so that’s a bit surprising/disappointing. The one thing we thought Bradish definitely had was swing-and-miss stuff, but that hasn’t really been there recently. The good news is that he seems to have traded that in for fewer walks and better BIP results.
For the year, he has a 21% K% with a 7% BB% on a 12.4% SwStr% and a 46% GB%. That has kept the xwOBA down to .310, which is very good - but not guaranteed to stick around.
The slider is insanely good. 148 Stuff+ and a 23% SwStr%, and when you watch him throw it’s really, really impressive. The thing moves like crazy and moves really late.
Let’s compare this all to last year, here’s the 2022 data:
So the SwStr% has come up because the slider and curveball have been better. The K-BB% stuff is actually really similar to last year so far (13% in 2022, 14% this year), so overall he looks like largely the same guy.
I guess expectations should be tempered a bit since he’s not getting a ton of whiffs and the fastball just doesn’t seem like all that great of a pitch for him.
But one thing that the report below points out that I didn’t see initially is the increased slider usage:
He’s thrown his best pitch more, and the results have been great these last two times out with an 11:1 K:BB and just one run and seven hits allowed in 12.2 innings.
Edward Cabrera had 18 whiffs of his own and had a nice start, but continues to be an absolute lightning rod. His 16% BB% is second-worst in the league. The 30% K% is nice, but 16% is just not going to work.
Since 2015, by my count, only 4 pitchers have posted walk rates above 12% and survived to face at least 500 batters in a season (that’s about 25 starts). Those names:
Blake Snell 2021
Francisco Liriano 2018
Robbie Ray 2018
Wade Miley 2017
I’d bail on CaBBrera so fast if someone offered me anything decent.
I thought we’d be saying the same kind of stuff about MacKenzie Gore, but he has his BB% down to 11.5%, and for his last five starts he’s at 7.9% while maintaining a 29% K%.
He’s fooled us before, but he’s been looking fantastic lately with the K-BB% above 20% in the last five starts.
I’d still sell high on him though because I just don’t trust these guys. It’s not reasonable to think that all of the sudden he’s a league-average walk guy, but with this run of starts you might have someone in your league biting - and I’d let them.
A more general concept to highlight is what powers the Magic Formula Qualifiers for pitchers. The three stats I most often look at and cite here for pitchers are K%, BB%, and GB%. You know I love scatter plots and I try to showcase all three of those stats using the K% vs. BB% scatter plot on the main MLB dashboard.
Coloring the dots is a popular way to show three variables are once, but in the ideal world we would have some 3D plot here where the GB% axis would be coming out of your screen right at your face and then you could see all three axis’s (axes? axi?) at once.
The Magic Formula looks at pitchers performing above or below a certain threshold in all three stats. But that’s a little bit simplistic, I do admit, because as your K% goes up, you get more leeway with the GB% and BB%. That’s also true with the inverses. I can stomach a few more walks if a ton of ground balls are being generated because that makes those walks more likely to be wiped away with double plays, and you can afford fewer strikeouts if you’re getting fewer walks because there aren’t as many guys on base when balls are put in play, etcetera etcetera.
So keep all that in mind and go check out that scatter plot. Someday when we’re all wearing stupid VR head sets when going on the Internet, I’ll be able to put out those 3D scatter plots - although I never intend to wear one of those dumb head sets because I want to live in the real world.
A few hitters to cover quickly.
Seiya Suzuki went all double-dong and has been rounding into shape nicely. In April he went .254/.333/.373 after a late start to the year. In May, he’s at .321/.403/.623 with a 12.2% Brl% and a 21% K%. Fantastic stuff. I really liked him coming into the year and it seems like patience is being rewarded with him, I’d call him a must-start player right now.
Justin Turner is also delivering YET AGAIN this year with a .282/.370/.429 line with five homers on a 4.3% Brl% and another sweet 14% K%. The raw power is low, but Fenway isn’t a bad place to steal some cheap homers if you can hit the ball high enough. He’s a guy that should be started in all leagues provided your team can handle the slight lack of production in homers and the zero steals.
Alex Bregman is also rewarding patience recently. The numbers haven’t been great for him this year but the underlying stuff is still solid. He has a ridiculous 9.5% K% for the year but a .224/.337/.379 slash line. His xBA is at .254 and the xwOBA is at .348 - so clearly he’s underpfromed. He’s not a fantasy stud like we thought he would be a few years ago. The raw power is middling and he doesn’t steal bags, but the batting average and RBIs should be very strong and he has the ability to still get 25 homers with the bat skills he has.
Orlando Arcia is doing his damndest to stay in the Braves’ lineup. All he has done is hit this year and now he’s back as a starter after the Vaughn Grissom demotion. He’s slashing .342/.405/.592 this year in 82 PAs. He has 4 homers on an 11.5% Brl% with a nice 18% K%. He’s still not a guy to add in moderate/shallow leagues, but maybe he can contribute in deeper leagues, he’s been racking up hits since spring training began - credit where credit is due!
That’s it for today! I believe I will have a major update to the MiLB Statcast Dashboard to announce later today or tomorrow, so keep an eye out for that - and we’ll get the game previews post out for today’s six-games as well.
