Dashboard update today. I took CSW% off of the main pitcher tab. After I did some studying on it yesterday, I don’t really see what it adds. It doesn’t predict BB% at all, and it’s worse than SwStr% at predicting K%. You could argue that it levels the field for the pitchers that get a ton of called strikes (Brady Singer, Adam Wainwright, Mitch Keller this year), but personally, I don’t want to hitch my wagon to called strikes. There are too many parties involved in a called strike
Since most called strikes are on the fringes of the strike zone, there is a lot of influence from the umpire there. This isn’t to say it’s a completely random stat, because we do see guys consistently delivering high CS% year to year.
I checked the year-to-year correlations for each, here are the results:
SwStr%: 0.84
Called Strike%: 0.69
CSW%: 0.78
SwStr% is more reliable year-to-year, and it does most of the heavy lifting in getting CSW% to that .78 mark.
I’ve replaced it Ball%, Strike%, and BIP%. So I’ve taken one thing and given you three in return. Here’s what those are:
Ball%: Percent of pitches resulting in a ball
Strike%: Percent of pitches resulting in a strike
BIP%: Percent of pitches resulting in a ball in play
League Averages:
Ball%: 36%
Strike%: 47%
BIP%: 17%
These will sum to 100%. Foul balls are strikes, even two-strike fouls that don’t actually add a strike.
Strike% Leaders (7 GS minimum):
Ball% Leaders:
BIP% Leaders:
Strike% is highly correlated with K%, Ball% is highly correlated with Ball%, BIP% is slightly correlated with K% but not really with BB%, here is the correlation matrix using 2022 data (1,000 pitches thrown minimum):
Strike% and Ball% are forced to correlate since they are zero-sum. So we’ll move forward with these stats, I think having these three in place of CSW% is going to give us a ton more information since so much of what CSW% tells us is covered by SwStr%.
I could even add a nice line plot for each pitcher to show these numbers on a per-start basis. That’s a sweet idea. Hell yeah.
Since we have the new stats and yesterday was a light slate, we can show the whole table for yesterday’s SPs:
Tyler Wells got roughed up a bit by Trout and Ohtani, but who can blame him for that! He posted a sweet 19% SwStr% and limited walks once again, so yeah he’s really pitching well this year.
He has his K-BB% above 18%, throwing a lot of strikes and very few balls:
The arsenal:
He had a pretty good 110 Stuff+ last year but the results didn’t come. This would be vindication for the Stuff+ bro’s, except for the fact that his Stuff+ is down to 90 this year (before last night’s start).
Bad results with Stuff+ 10% better than average, good results with Stuff+ 10% worse than average. Stuff+ continues to flummox me.
Speaking of Stuff+, Taj Bradley had his return to the bigs yesterday. It wasn’t great, but he survived it. I picked him up in the home league and he looked awful in the first inning so I turned it off to listen to more Morgan Wallen, so I was relieved to see that he survived it and didn’t walk anybody after the first inning. The stats for the year:
Here is the game logs tab, where I have added Strike%, Ball%, and BIP%:
Strike% way down yesterday, Ball% way up. Bad news! The good news is that he still has really, really good STUFF - and I say that NOT in the STUFF PLUS way, but just with the old EYE BALL test.
Can he just start throwing more strikes overnight? Sure, I guess! I mean it helps that he was throwing a bunch of strikes in those first three starts. What happened to the guy? He had this problem in the minors the last few weeks too.
Are there any “intangibles” bros out there to take a crack at explaining this? Was he just SO SHOOK by the demotion that his MENTALS are all messed up and his release point is forked? That seems like something the intangibles bros would say… nerds.
Eury Perez put up a loserish 7.7% SwStr%. But don’t look now a still-strong 30.8% CSW%! Is there a theme in this post?
I guess I just realized that I’m being a bit hypocritical here. I said above that getting a called strike is dependent on a hitter not swinging. But the opposite is true with swinging strikes. You can’t get a swinging strike if the hitter doesn’t swing. Like me and my boys could get 9 of us together and go face Gerrit Cole, not swing at all, take our 27 strikeouts and go home. That would put a big fat 0% SwStr% on Gerrit Cole and all the analytic bro’s like me would be like holy cow he didn’t get a single whiff against that lineup of desk job dudes!?!?
So maybe I should swing% into this somehow! But I’m certain that a pitcher has very little control over the swing rates they face, that’s gotta be at least like 80% on the hitter.
This stuff is all so interesting, isn’t it? What a great game baseball is, and shout out to the people who invented math, which according to Google is the Sumerians:
Of course, the proper answer to the question is God invented math and we are merely discovering it as we go. I don’t even think you need to be a believer in a god/God to agree with that. Math is obviously just an inherent truth, a given. A major part in the defined and constant order of the universe. How can you have a constant, defined order in a universe that was not created by a constant, ordered entity? That sounds impossible to me! Once again, I have settled the age-old God debate, shout out to me!
All of those words written and I didn’t even get to the JA Model Pitcher of the Day which was Trevor Williams - lol. A season-high 13 whiffs and a 14% SwStr%. But who cares about that? I go from proving the existence of God directly to wasting a paragraph on Trevor Williams. Shout out to Trevor Williams though, nice guy.
I had a little too much fun with this one - let’s get this bad boy published already!
