Resource update today - there is a new link for the MiLB Statcast Dashboard. You will find that in the Resource Glossary as well as the bottom of this post where the premium links are.
The dashboard has been upgraded to have all minor league levels covered. I now get the pitch-by-pitch level data for all minor league games, not just the Statcast games. You obviously won’t have things like barrels, velocities, pitch types, pitch movement, exit velo, etc. on these non-statcast games, but it’s more data than we had originally.
I’ll be making a tutorial video on how to use it for subscribers next week, so look out for that. Here’s an example of what we’re talking about with Andrew Abbott:
You can see that in his first three games, there is nothing there for Brl%, GB%, LD%, or FB%. That is because those games were in AA where they don’t capture that data, but the K% and BB% (zone%, strike%, and ball% will be added to this soon) are there because we are getting the pitch-by-pitch data now everywhere. Hope that makes sense, go check out the new dashboard - there’s a ton of stuff in there for you minor league fans.
As you may know, because I can’t keep my personal life to myself, I have three kids. I’ve been mixing it up with them with older and newer stuff in terms of movies and shows and books and stuff. They probably shouldn’t watch any TV, I know, but don’t patronize me - the world isn’t a perfect place.
Anyways, there seems to me to be a huge difference between the old kids’ stuff and the new kids’ stuff. It’s not that one is necessarily better than the other, but there’s clearly a difference. Like we watched Toy Story last night and that movie is littered with jokes for the adults and all kinds of other stuff that would just go right over any kid’s head. I don’t really see that with the new stuff. I wonder if that’s because these media companies realize that parents aren’t watching stuff WITH their kids nearly as much, so they don’t need to appeal to the parent. That is probably true, which is a little scary.
Sometimes the older kids’ stuff seemed a little too adult, and sometimes the newer stuff seems just over-the-top childish. It’s a lot of just complete nonsense with no educational or thought-provoking content even attempted.
But I had them watch a Mister Rogers Neighborhood a couple of weeks ago and it wasn’t three minutes into the episode before old Fred was showing us a dead fish. His fish died I guess so they made a whole thing out of it. He explained that animals die and then he went and buried it in his backyard. And then the next episode description said that Fred was going to talk about how Santa isn’t real. I feel that would be a serious gut punch to a kid these days, but maybe not - maybe we underestimate kids in that regard.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a hard-hearted realist. My daughter already knows Santa isn’t real and we had a good talk about a dead bird the other day. The point is, they have completely changed how they make kids content over the last few decades and if nothing else, that’s interesting to me.
Michael Kopech is a big jerk. What kind of dude walks six batters one day and then a week later walks none with ten strikeouts?
Overall he’s been awful with a 10% K-BB%, but he showed us that he still has some of that upside.
I was going to say he’s been really inconsistent, but that’s not even true - he’s been pretty consistently bad.
Because of that, he doesn’t show up high on the standard deviation of fantasy scoring list, here are those leaders from this year:
That gives us the chance to highlight possibly the worst start of Zac Gallen’s career.
He walked four with just two strikes out on seven whiffs. Against the PIRATES too.
Lowest Strike% of the year and therefore his highest Ball%. Not good, but no reason to view him any differently today than you did yesterday.
Brandon Bielak pitched quite well with 17 whiffs. He hadn’t gone above 10 before that, pitching is a weird thing, my dudes!
If you’re going to have a bad fastball, you might as well have two different grips on it - which is what Bielak is doing with the four-seam and sinker. I’m actually going to change these pitch arsenal tables to include Strike%, Ball%, and BIP%. I’m going to do that RIGHT NOW and then re-post that screenie.
Wtf where did SwStr% go. I goofed it up! Here you go:
Updated the benchmarks too:
I don’t think Bielak is very good, but he had a good outing - maybe just a testament to the Athletics being very bad.
That reminds me to give an update on the team hitting stats, here are the league’s worst team OPS marks.
Update from earlier, the kids are watching more of Toy Story and my daughter is now sitting on my lap because she’s scared of the scene where Sid does surgery on the toys. Kids’ movies were a lot scarier in the past too…
Reid Detmers was also very good last night with a silly 38% SwStr% on his slider. Here’s how that pitch has performed throughout the year:
Velo and spin have been very consistent, but he’s had a couple of big splash games with the whiffs. Last night was one of them - that was a wild outing for the man! Maybe he’s turning a corner, but probably not!
Alright, I’ve spent more time on this than I should on a Saturday, have a good day, my people!
