I will have to do a podcast in the next couple of days to catch up on those reader requests. I’ll plan that for Monday or Tuesday afternoon, so submit anything you want with that button right and I’ll cover it this week in audio form.
I have my second wood bat baseball league game tonight. The family is going to come, so my wife told my daughter last night if she wanted to go see daddy’s baseball game and she asked if there would be fireworks. We went to a South Bend Cubs game last year and there were fireworks after a home run and they scared the crap out of her. So her expectations are clearly that I will be playing professional baseball with a big crowd and a nice field and all that.
I think the hardest part about having multiple kids is the incessant nature of it. At this point I can hardly even get up early enough to beat them all out of bed and have some time alone to read or start this stuff or do whatever. With one really young kid you do okay because you get like a solid 10-11 hours of them sleeping at night and you only need to sleep for 6-8 so there are 3-4 hours there where you’re awake and they’re not. But then you start multiplying the kids and you need them all to be asleep at the same time, and that makes the bayesian probability shrink a ton. It’s not hard to hit one coin flip, but it’s really tough to hit three in a row.
This all sounds complainy, but I’m not writing it in that tone. Your expectations and view on your own life shifts (hopefully) as things change around you, and you come to not even miss the things you thought you couldn’t live without. Like never having any alone time sounded terrifying to me before having kids, but now it’s fine. The best way to find happiness and contentment is to not make your life about your own desires and expectations. Do your duty, stick to your commitments, be fruitful and multiply - and live for your family and community instead of yourself - you won’t be disappointed!
Aaron Nola had his best start of the year against the Cubs. Season-bests in

Whiffs

BIP%
That’s what you wanna see!
Nola is a good lesson on just filing some pitchers in a special category where what they do in the first month or two of the season shouldn’t really matter to you. If you draft a guy like Nola who has proven himself over several years, you just start them every time and don’t even really worry about what’s happening. You don’t need to go deep into the data to find out what might be going wrong if they start slow, just ignore it and keep starting them - spend your time on something else.
Chris Sale had his fourth-straight great start and it seems like he’s back to his ace-like ways. He has double-digit whiffs in four straight and he’s gone above 15 in these last three. A 27:3 K:BB ratio over the last three starts as well, he’s doing great.
Mitch Keller went 8:0 in K:BB despite only getting 8 whiffs, but I guess we can just rely on the called strike with how he’s pitching.
He’s now sixth in the league in K-BB% for the season among pitchers with at least 7 starts. His SwStr% is so far below the rest of this group, which is interesting but I guess not necessarily a scary thing:
Here’s an update on the CS vs. SwStr% plot:
He and Rasmussen are the only red dots below the 12% SwStr% line, and he’s well below it. The reds do seem to float gradually downward as you move upward on the called strike axis, but Keller is pushing the limits.
It’s possible here that the SwStr% is down on Keller partly because hitters just can’t pull the trigger on his pitches. Again, you can’t generate a swinging strike if the hitter doesn’t swing, so maybe if hitters decided to swing at more of these well-located fastballs, they’d miss anyways and the dot would just move upward rather than to the right.
This made me wonder about swing rates against certain pitchers. I don’t have a leaderboard for that, but I checked Keller. The league average swing rate is 47%, against Keller it’s 49%. That’s because he throws pitches in the zones eight points above the league average. So this is a multi-variate question as well. You would have to weigh swing rates against zone rates and go from there, but it’s Sunday morning so I don’t have time to go down this road any further.
It’s a very interesting relationship here between called and swinging strikes - that plot above is one of the more interesting ones I have on the dashboard. I’m not going to qualm about a dude with a 25% K-BB% after nine starts, so Keller can be treated and used as an ace moving forward as far as I’m concerned.
On the young pitcher watch. Grayson Rodriguez, Louie Varland, Brandon Pfaadt, and JP Sears all pitched yesterday.
Sears was great against the Astros with six strong innings and a good 7:1 K:BB. Grayson and Louie were okay going five innings and not damaging anybody, but falling short of what we really want to see - but they were tougher matchups (Grayson vs. TOR, Varland vs. LAA).
Pfaadt was bad again, this time against the Pirates. 9.4% SwStr%, 13% K%, really awful strike rate. He just might not be ready for the show.
Aaron Judge had two more barrels, he’s basically in peak 2022 form right now. It won’t be long before he leads the league in dingers, methinks.
Randy Arozarena hit a ball 115.3 miles per hour, a new high for him. He has really improved in the power arena.
I don’t think there’s been a more-improved hitter in the league. Way more exit velo, more fly balls, and no sacrifices on contact or strikeouts. Total stud hitter right now and probably for the next few years (he’s 28).
Quick look at some recently called-up hitters:
Morel is doing all the damage, but the 58% contact% is just insanely low. Hard to even believe it’s that low.
McLain has a crazy high strikeout rate but the contact rate is actually pretty good. He doesn’t swing very much (39%), so pitchers are clearly exploiting that and getting a ton of called strikes on him. As for Morel, he swings 52% of the time and has a 36% chase rate. Those are both high. It’s tough being a rookie!
I’m out of time here, let’s get to the rest of the stuff - have a happy Sunday! No game previews today, FYI!
