I will be doing another podcast on here this afternoon or tomorrow to clear out the questions inbox, so if you have anything you want me to cover go ahead and send through the form via the button right above.
It was also announced yesterday by the man Chris Clegg at Dynasty Dugout that he and I have a partnership going now. He wanted his readers to have access to the minor league dashboards so we worked out a deal where his readers can have that.
That’s good news for me, but for you all, for right now - you get nothing extra, so that sucks for you! I can’t even be like “go subscribe to the Dynasty Dugout to get the minor league dashboard”, because you already have it by subscribing here. And I don’t want you to become a paid sub THERE and not HERE - that would be tragic.
All kidding aside, Chris does so much stuff for minor-league coverage. So if you’re really into dynasty leagues you’re shorting yourself by not being a member of his Substack.
Chris is also a genuinely good dude, and I’m pretty stingy with who I say that about. I can’t say I have the best impression of the fANtAsy bAseBAlL inDuSTry as a whole. I think a lot of these guys are super fake and vindictive and don’t even really have much to offer on the content front - but Chris doesn’t fall into that category. It’s not that I think I’m some great person saint, I’m not. I’m trash, but at least I realize I’m trash.
Side bar I really hate that people even call it an industry as if we’re like actually producing and selling stuff that benefits the world. Fantasy sports are entertainment to the max, I mean none of this stuff has to exist - it’s all just a massive privilege of the cushy soft life we live in the West. Imagine me going back to like 1805 and being like hey yeah I pay my mortgage writing about other guys who are playing a sport every day and I do it from my basement.
I took a detour from the main point there. But anyways, Clegg is my kinda guy! Husband, father, a man of actual faith - and that means a lot to me. Am I positively favoring him because his lifestyle and beliefs match mine? You betcha!
Check out The Dynasty Dugout, and be on the lookout for some possible podcasts and cross-substack content.
Luis Severino came back and threw 75 pitches with a 56% strike rate and a 16% SwStr%. That’s beautiful, good for him. You can start him this week with full confidence.
Max Scherzer put up just an 8.1% SwStr% yesterday. He’s down at a 22.6% K% this year, which is frightening. Maybe some of that is just because he hasn’t really been healthy yet, but who is to say he will be healthy eventually? He’s old. I don’t think you can do anything with him right now other than continue to start him, it’s not like he’s a good trade candidate -but some concern is justified
Josiah Gray was awful with a 26% BB% and an 8% SwStr%. The strike rate was 37%, but he avoided hard contact and kept runs off of the board - but a very alarming start and I wouldn’t be confident starting him moving forward.
Shohei Ohtani and Lance Lynn led the day in SwStr% at 22.2% and 20% respectively. I don’t think anybody was ever concerned with Ohtani even after his handful of less-than-stellar starts, but it was still nice to see him just completely dominate once again. As for Lynn, that made a very successful two-start week for him as he fired off 13 innings with 11 hits, 13 strikeouts and just two walks. The underlying numbers have been strong for him all year so I hope you just kept on starting him or bought low on him LIKE I TOLD YOU TO!
Merrill Kelly had another good outing against the Pirates and can now say that he’s posted a 25% K-BB% in May. If he’s available on the wire he’s definitely a guy to start for the rest of the year given the league context. He’s been very solid, and you can’t say that about too many pitchers that are available in some leagues.
On the hitting side, we must talk about Christopher Morel once again. He’s now hit eight homers in 48 PA. He’s only played three games where he hasn’t homered and he has a 1.352 OPS on the year.
But you know what I’m here to do, don’t you? Don’t you!? Put on your parkas because here come the buckets of cold water.
Here are some stats on Morel
» Zone Contact%: 62.5% - worst in the league
» Contact%: 58.8% - 7th-worst in the league
» K%: 36.2% - 19th-worst in the league
» Brl%: 28.6% - 2nd-best in the league
Morel is clearly going to the plate with one thing in mind - hit dingers. So far he’s done that at an egregious rate.
I could tell you he’s due for regression, but that would be stupid. Everybody knows that, I’m not giving you anything useful by saying that. What I’m going to show you are some other hitters through the Statcast era that have shown profiles similar to Morel’s.
Here are all of the hitters I found meeting this criteria
→ Brl% above 15%
→ Cont% below 60%
→ Swing% above 50%
That’s it, just six of them - and one is a pitcher. Here’s how those seasons went for O’Neill and Hiura
O’Neill 2018 - .254/.303/.500, 9 HR in 61 G
Hiura 2021 - .168/.256/.301, 4 HR in 61 G
That’s being awful specific so let’s loosen things up a bit. Here’s a list of hitters since 2015 that have had seasons of 200+ PA, a contact rate under 65%, and a barrel rate above 15%, and I think it’s fair to say that Morel will fit that criterion moving forward.
Miguel Sano-2015, Chris Carter-2015, Giancarlo Stanton-2015, Chris Davis-2015, Chris Carter-2016, Chris Davis-2016, Giancarlo Stanton-2016, Byung-ho Park-2016, Joey Gallo-2017, Miguel Sano-2017, Matt Davidson-2017, Joey Gallo-2018, Teoscar Hernandez-2018, Tyler Austin-2018, Aaron Judge-2018, Joey Gallo-2019, Miguel Sano-2019, Brandon Lowe-2019, Jason Castro-2019, Aaron Judge-2019, Patrick Wisdom-2021, Luke Voit-2021, Bobby Bradley-2021, Mike Zunino-2021, Joey Gallo-2021, Bobby Dalbec-2021, Miguel Sano-2021, Shohei Ohtani-2021, Joey Gallo-2022, Keston Hiura-2022, Trayce Thompson-2022, J.D. Davis-2022, Giancarlo Stanton-2022, Oneil Cruz-2022
I’m not going to go through each of those seasons to see which ones were fantasy relevant, but just a quick once-over and an educated guess is about 7? And they were mostly all seasons where they just got you there with homers and RBI while being a huge drag on your batting average.
Morel has foot speed too, which a lot of these guys don’t - and that will help him not only steal bases but leg out a few extra hits - but this guy is going to be hitting under .240 by July there’s almost no doubt about it.
I know the “sell high” thing is much more easily said than done. Unless you’re in a non-serious work league or something like that, you aren’t going to fool anybody into thinking Morel is some fantasy stud. But I would tell you that if you can get any kind of decent to good starter, you should do it. I’m talking like Teoscar Hernandez or Rowdy Tellez or Alex Cobb or Jhoan Duran - something like that!
That’s obviously going to be tough for you to do since Morel has done so much for you since you picked him up, but you have to overcome your impulses here. Be strong, it’s time to let go. Run for the hills, my friends.
That took a long time, now it’s time for me to go do other things.
