NEW LOGO ALERT! Shout out to Producer Lee for making all these graphics for me, I’m loving it:
His subscription has been comp’d for life now, and I will be bringing him a very nice expensive bottle of cheap Buffalo Trace soon as he has recently bought a house! All that is left to do is for him and his wife to have a son and name him Jonathan!

Took reader questions yesterday in podcast form, check that out here:
I’m trying something new today as you’ll see right away at the top of the report. I tried to get a readable table of every SP from yesterday to show their SwStr%, Strike%, Ball%, and BIP%.
I have it all looking super nice in the text file that gets generated:
But the dots didn’t line up on the Substack page… so I had to manually intervene on that, which I don’t want to do everyday, so sometimes that will look pretty wonky.
I’m also afraid of what it will look like on mobile, it might be insanely gross looking, and if that’s the case I’ll probably scrap it moving forward.
Plenty of interesting names took the bump last night, let’s start with Bobby Miller, who pitched well against the Braves going 5 innings and giving up just one run on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
He was pretty BLAH with the SwStr% at 10.5%, but he threw a ton of strikes:
That 52% strike rate is 5.5 points above the league average, and I always like to see that from young guys. The Braves put a ton of those fastballs in play (6.9% SwStr%), but they couldn’t do a ton of damage on them.
That gives Miller the 5th-highest average velo on a four-seamer this year, including relievers:
So the question is - does high velocity on a four-seamer help you get whiffs and limit barrels? Well that’s not THE question, but it’s MY question, and I am going to answer it!
Let me bust out my Python (rofl) real quick.
ff1=sav2223[sav2223['pitch_type']=='FF'].groupby(['player_name','pitcher','pitch_type'],as_index=False)['PitchesThrown','IsSwStr','IsBrl','BallInPlay'].sum()
ff1['SwStr%'] = round(ff1['IsSwStr']/ff1['PitchesThrown'],3)*100
ff1['Brl%'] = round(ff1['IsBrl']/ff1['BallInPlay'],3)*100
ff1 = ff1[ff1['PitchesThrown']>500]
ff2=sav2223[sav2223['pitch_type']=='FF'].groupby(['player_name','pitcher','pitch_type'],as_index=False)['release_speed'].mean()
ff2['release_speed'] = round(ff2['release_speed'], 0)
ffdata = pd.merge(ff1,ff2,on=['player_name','pitcher','pitch_type'],how='left')
ffdata = ffdata[['player_name','pitcher','pitch_type','PitchesThrown','release_speed','SwStr%','Brl%']]
ffdata.columns=['Pitcher','ID','Pitch','PC','Velo','SwStr%','Brl%']
ffdata.sort_values(by='Velo',ascending=False)
Here’s my Python’s output (lmao):
Lots of you are very confused and disgusted right now. Here are the scatter daddies that we want, that we need!
ffdata.plot.scatter(x='Velo',y='SwStr%',title='FF Velo vs. SwStr, 2022-2023')
ffdata.plot.scatter(x='Velo',y='Brl%',title='FF Velo vs. Brl%, 2022-2023')
Correlations:
So there’s a slight relationship with SwStr% and basically nothing for Brl%. The extra velo BY ITSELF seems to earn you a few more whiffs but it doesn’t help you limit the barrel. Controlling barrels is all about the command, and I can’t say too much about Miller’s command right now because we haven’t seen a ton of him in the pitch-tracking era.
I didn’t intend to go down that road, but interesting stuff to learn. I’d certainly rather have a 99mph fastball than a 96, but you need a lot more than velo to have a successful fastball.
The thing I like most about Miller’s profile is the DEPTH. He threw five different pitches and four of them more than 10% of the time. None of the SwStr% marks were great, but the presence of a slider, changeup, and curveball raises his floor and ceiling, I think.
I’m sure there will be plenty of bumps in the road and I don’t think Miller is a guy that should be started in every league, but I like him more than some of these other rookies that come up to the bigs with 2-3 pitches and start throwing a bunch of balls.
Taj Bradley waved the green flag for the Blue Jays hit parade yesterday, giving up nine of those 27 hits they racked up.
The Jays hit .519 yesterday and put up a team 1.365 OPS.
If I just told you that and you didn’t know what Bradley’s line was, you’d actually be a bit relieved that he only gave up four earned runs. He even had a sweet 7:0 K:BB ratio. There was plenty to like in that start:
A 17.5% SwStr% with a 28% Ball% is excellent. That’s only been done 32 times this year by these pitchers:
'Brandon Woodruff', 'Chris Sale', 'Clayton Kershaw', 'Corbin Burnes', 'Cristian Javier', 'Domingo German', 'Dylan Cease', 'Eduardo Rodriguez', 'Framber Valdez', 'Hunter Greene', 'Jesus Luzardo', 'Joe Ryan', 'Kevin Gausman', 'Lance Lynn', 'Logan Gilbert', 'Luis Castillo', 'Luis Garcia', 'Matthew Boyd', 'Merrill Kelly', 'Nathan Eovaldi', 'Pablo Lopez', 'Sandy Alcantara', 'Shane McClanahan', 'Spencer Strider', 'Zach Eflin'
Sorry about the funky formatting there, my Python likes to spit out commas and quote marks. You can see that’s a list of pretty elite pitchers. It’s not easy to throw that many strikes and get that many whiffs at the same time.
I don’t want to be too optimistic, but I’d rather see a start like from a guy like Bradley than one where he doesn’t allow many hits or runs but gets very few whiffs and throws a bunch of balls - I think you’re starting Bradley moving forward in all but the shallowest of leagues.
Brayan Bello pitched a beaut last night against the Angels even though he took the loss after giving up two solo homers. Everything else was strong though with six strikeouts in seven innings and most importantly, ZERO walks.
Interestingly, he used the four-seamer way more:
That’s kind of questionable to me. The reduced sinker usage predictably led to season-highs in both fly balls allowed (6) and line drives allowed (5), and the SwStr% came in at just 12.2%.
He also had a lower Strike% than his last two outings, which is confusing given that he went from five walks to zero, so this is all a bit confusing.
His four-seamer has a lower strike rate and a higher ball rate than his sinker and a much, much lower GB%, and a much worse Stuff+ (but a higher SwStr%):
So I don’t know, interesting choice there. Maybe he just didn’t have the “feel” for the sinker? Although I’ve never really heard of that… the sinker and four-seamer only differ by the grip, right? Kinda goofy, but it worked. I’m just a dude in a basement but I’d rather him throw that 67% GB% sinker as his primary weapon.
The news overall is good. He’s now had two good starts in a row with two different approaches, although they’ve been good for different reasons.
Start 1: Higher SI Usage, Lots of BB, Lots of K, Lots of GB
Start 2: Higher FF Usage, No BB, Less K, Less GB
He’s an interesting one to keep tabs on moving forward, and we will do that - he will definitely be getting another start next week for the Red Sox even after Whitlock’s return.
E-Rod said see ya later to the changeup last night (the changeup is orange below):
The results were great with an 18.9% SwStr%, a 54% Strike%, and a 29% Ball% - but he gave up nine hits and two walks and lost to the Royals, as the JA betting model predicted shout out to me.
Graham Ashcraft is a complete disaster. He’s now given up 25 earnies in his last 17.1 innings for a 12.98 ERA and a 2.13 WHIP. His K% has been 16% in those outings, but at least he’s not walking many hitters at 6%. He’s scored negative fantasy points overall in these last four starts.
Two of these starts have been in Cincy, and one has been in Coors, but I mean that’s no excuse for a double-digit ERA. He’s not this bad (nobody is, I don’t think), but it just goes to show you what can happen when you don’t have a good breaking ball or offspeed pitch.
Despite all of that, he shows up on the Hot Pitcher Tracker - which is hilarious. That just means he’s earning more strikes (higher CSW%) and walking fewer hitters than he has in the past. And you can’t say he’s not! He’s throwing a lot of strikes, but that’s kinda the problem! Stupid hot pitcher tracker!
Chris Morel gave you another chance to trade him today, hitting yet another homer but also whiffing three more times.
He now has nine homers on nine barrels, and they’ve all been blasts - meaning they’ve really, really been hit well.
His contact rate is now below 58% and he has a 35% K%. His 53% FB% leads the league by two whole points. This cannot go on!
I mean I’m dead serious if Chris Morel gets 400 PA this year and has a .900+ OPS I’ll eat a diaper. A clean one.
The MLB betting angle to the Substack continues on. Paid subs get a spreadsheet with bet value grades for tons of different bet types. Last night, for fun, I wrote down the top bet values for each game on the board:
Those bets went 12-3, and five of the wins were +money bets. I’m sure that won’t happen very often, but it makes me feel pretty cool. I’m like that cool guy in high school that had a bookie and would tell you about all the money he was winning betting on Kobe and Shaq. Except all the kids I’m thinking of from my high school experience right now didn’t turn out very well…
Anyways if you’re into MLB betting I do think the paid Sub here is well worth the $7/month just for that stuff alone - to say nothing about all the other stuff.
Please leave your feedback on the new “SP Roundup” thing below, it definitely gives you more information than in the past, but the clunkiness and ugliness might offset that benefit.
