Request Player/Topic For Me to Discuss
Somebody requested that I add more pitch mix change analysis to use the most recent few starts rather than just the previous day, so I have done that. Now we have a script to compare every pitcher’s last 3 starts with their previous starts this year (provided there were at least 3 starts prior), and then it will show us which pitchers have changed a certain pitch usage by at least a dozen points, here’s what it looks like right now:
Jhony Brito Sinker: +19.9%
Tommy Henry Curveball: -18.3%
Shohei Ohtani Sweeper: -17.9%
Hunter Brown 4-Seam Fastball: +17.5%
Jordan Lyles 4-Seam Fastball: -16.9%
Graham Ashcraft Cutter: +16.4%
Braxton Garrett 4-Seam Fastball: -14.9%
Luke Weaver Cutter: +14.5%
Yusei Kikuchi Curveball: +14.5%
Kyle Bradish Slider: +14.4%
Chris Sale 4-Seam Fastball: +14.3%
Eric Lauer Cutter: +13.5%
Jose Berrios Sinker: +13.5%
Cal Quantrill Sinker: -13.2%
Roansy Contreras Slider: -13.2%
Zack Greinke Curveball: -12.9%
Eduardo Rodriguez 4-Seam Fastball: +12.6%
Yusei Kikuchi Slider: -12.5%
Graham Ashcraft Sinker: -12.2%
Why 12 points? Well, 10 gave me way too many results, and 15 didn’t give me enough! I feel like a 10-point change is significant enough to note, but I also don’t want to dump 20+ names on here every day for length purposes, so we’ll roll with 12 for a little bit and see what happens.
I also scrapped the thing I showed yesterday where I was showing SwStr%, Strike%, Ball%, and BIP% for every SP from the day before. I have changed it to just be a Strike% leaderboard, and I took the top 15 rather than the top 10. So CSW% is gone from these notes, but it’s still on the dashboard and it’s on the new google sheet report I developed yesterday for paid subs that looks like like this:
You should have been given access to that if you’re a paid sub. The link is below the paywall - so just request access if you don’t have it and I’ll provide that as soon as I can.
It’s pretty clear who the pitcher of the day yesterday was, and it was Michael Kopech, who has really put us through the ringer this season.
He went for a 9:1 K:BB yesterday with a 17.4% SwStr% and a crazy 53.3% Strike%. That gives him 19 strikeouts and one walk in his last two starts while slapping up 15 scoreless innings on just three hits. That’s 77 fantasy points in his last two starts, I have to imagine that’s the most of any two-start stretch for anybody this season.
The pitch mix hasn’t changed:
He has thrown more strikes:
The fastball velo is up a tick and the SwStr% have come way up:
He’s done this stuff before with the fastball. It can be a very tough pitch to hit.
I also saw this tweet:
I’m not very quick to buy into release point and “shape” stuff. If it were as simple as changing a release point and a shape to make a pitch way better, I would think any given pitcher would have already done that - but that’s not a great argument on my part and maybe this is Kopech finally figuring something out with the fastball.
I don’t know. All I do know is that he had these two starts against horrible lineups, and he has a history of having very good outings in the past just to fall back into horribleness. I’m not buying into Kopech right now, but yeah the velocity is up - so there has been some kind of change here and that should make us feel a little bit better about it.
Bryce Miller also had another good outing with six scoreless innings against the Athletics. Six strikeouts, one walk.
He did what you should do against the A’s, just throw a bunch of strikes and see what happens.
After his first start I was like damn that guy throws a lot of fastballs he should probably take it easy on that, and then I mentioned how I bet he would reduce the fastball usage moving forward since he probably just wanted to keep it simple in his first outing, but NOPE - the four-seam usage has gone UP.
It was above 80% yesterday, which is just insane. Most relievers don’t even go above 80% with their best pitch. For the year it’s at 71%, still
That’s the top pitch usage for any pitch of any qualified pitcher by the way my script tracks it (I’m not sure what the qualification criteria is there):
Hey, look it’s our boy Kopech too!
His four-seamer is obviously very good. The SwStr% is 13.9% and the Stuff+ is above 140, but come on 70% usage? I just can’t really believe this is going to work for the guy.
And why are all the rookie pitchers named Miller? TF is going on here…
It might sound dumb and crazy, but after looking at Bobby Miller yesterday and the contrast his pitch arsenal has with Bryce’s, I think I would take Bobby for the rest of the season. That guy has four pitches, all with good pitch modeling metrics, and four is a lot bigger of a number than one.
Bryce Elder fired off another good start and now has the third-lowest ERA in the league:
But a 14.8% K-BB% is bad, his SwStr% is average, the Strike% and Ball% are average, and his Stuff+ marks are pretty awful.
The 56% GB% is good to see, and that does help you keep runs off the board - but yeah I mean this dude is seriously overperforming.
This account tried to trigger us all last night:
First of all, don’t give me a NATIONAL LEAGUE leaderboard, there’s no reason to separate the NL and AL, it’s not 1994.
But point taken, he’s massively beating the Statcast page. I don’t even really need to continue with the argument I was going to make because everybody knows and my audience here would almost all agree just by virtue of them being here and reading this far - so what’s the point?
If I had Bryce Elder and Christopher Morel right now - I would totally trade them for Shohei Ohtani.
Nestor Cortes got three whiffs… three!
He’s below 17% with the K-BB% now and the SwStr% is pretty concerning. He has a 5.30 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. I don’t think he should be that bad, but he certainly doesn’t look like the guy we saw last year.
You’re certainly not going to get a good return from him in a trade since he really only has that one season in the past of great performance, so most people are thinking last year was the fluke rather than this year. That’s probably the wrong way to look at it since last year was much more data than this year, but that’s how she goes. I’d probably just keep starting Cortes for another turn or two to see what happens before making some decision - at the end of the day he hasn’t really had repeated BAD starts, he just hasn’t had the very good ones this year.
Cal Quantrill is a bum, and we’ve known that for a long time. It’s time for them to bring up this Gavin Williams cat.
Francisco Alvarez homered in that Wrigley Wind Game yesterday. I didn’t bet the game, luckily. It had a 6.5 over/under with the wind forecast, which I always think is a major overreaction. He and Nico Hoerner still managed to hit homers, so clearly it wasn’t an impossible feat to hit the long ball - but the game still finished 4-2 and the under hit, and I never would have touched an under 6.5 - so shout out to me for abstaining.
Anyways, Alvarez is now a MAGIC FORMULA QUALIFIER with a 17.6% K% and a 17.1% Brl% over the last three weeks. He may have unofficially ARRIVED. He should certainly be a starting catcher in all fantasy leagues right now given his power-hitting prowess and the low K% we’re seeing early on this year.
Javier Baez has been deemed cold by my alogirthm, so at least there’s some normalcy returning to the world.
I guess that’s all I have to say, here we go with the rest of the stuff.
