What in the world was that from Alex Faedo? 32 fantasy points, 18 whiffs, 10 strikeouts!
For the year now he has a 13.6% SwStr% with a surprising 26.8% K% and a 1.2% BB%. That’s a 22:1 K:BB for the year. His slider is filthy at a 25.9% SwStr% - all of this is stuff I didn’t know before.
Faedo throws a bunch of strikes and if he can locate and be a little bit lucky with the mediocre fastball, I guess he’s capable of these kinds of starts - who knew!
Zach Eflin went seven innings with zero strikeouts. That’s something you almost never see, and in fact, we’ve seen it just three times since 2021. Adam Wainwright nearly did it last year going 6.2 innings with no strikeouts, here’s the list:
Eflin generated just three whiffs and a 3.2% SwStr%.
He’s had some starts where he got a ton of whiffs, including his previous one with 16 whiffs against the Brewers.
Maybe this was a conscious decision (I mean I don’t think he consciously wanted to not strike anybody out, but maybe he just wanted to play more to contact against the Blue Jays for whatever reason) as he threw the sinker a ton:
When the cutter and curveball come down, the whiffs are going to fall as well.
There are plenty of ways that Eflin can go with it, and that makes him a very interesting pitcher - especially in real-life baseball. The start yesterday was good for your ERA, but you probably aren’t hyped about getting zero strikeouts - especially in K/9 leagues and stuff like that - but overall you’ve been pretty happy with Eflin and you shouldn’t be thinking that he can’t get a good amount of strikeouts if he wants to moving forward.
Blake Snell continues to be a loser and way worse than Nolan Gorman. He had no command yesterday with four walks, but he did keep runs off the scoreboard. But a 5 IP, 4 BB, 6 K, no win start doesn’t help us in fantasy and I really don’t like this guy.
Braxton Garrett didn’t do well in Coors, but he had a high 18% SwStr% and he’s been throwing this new cutter a lot lately:
The cutter data:
Pretty sweet pitch with a 17% SwStr% and a 54% Strike%, albeit on just 109 pitches. That’s pretty interesting/exciting stuff.
Garrett is on the Magic Formula Qualifier list with a 29% K%, a 7% BB%, and a 44% GB% over the last three weeks.
He is near the top of the soft upcoming schedule chart with matchups against the Padres and Royals scheduled as his next two, I’d go pick him up if available:
Austin Riley got going with two dingers. He still has a pretty lackluster stat line this year with a sub-.800 OPS, a 26.5% K%, and a 10.1% Brl%. That’s not what we drafted Riley for, but maybe he’ll be coming around soon, I wouldn’t be worried about anything right now - but it does kind of show what can happen when you draft a guy that doesn’t steal bases in the first two rounds. If the power isn’t there, it can be pretty rough for you.
Brl% vs. Contact% - May
I love these scatter plots so much. We see Jose Siri and Triston Casas standing out below a 26% K% with a Brl% above 20%.
The full list of hitters in May with a K% below 27% and a Brl% above 20%:
You can probably still get your hands on Casas and Siri in most leagues, and J.D. Martinez may be pretty easily acquired with a trade. He’s swinging the bat very well this year while healthy, so in redraft he’s probably significantly undervalued given his age and perceived BLAH-ness.
