Zack Wheeler finally put the sweet skills together with the good luck and threw up 8 scoreless innings with a dozen strikeouts against the Braves. 22 whiffs and a 21% SwStr% - good Wheeler! But what else is there to say about him?
Logan Webb was the #2 scorer of the day. I’m not sure people have talked enough about how good he’s been this year. He has brought the K% up to 26.9% and kept the walks at 4.9%.
The SwStr% is still below-average, but he does have spike games in that regard, including yesterday at 17%.
He has kind of bailed on the slider recently:
That could be because he’s facing more lefties in these last few starts, but I don’t care enough to check! For the year, he throws the slider 14% of the time to lefties and then 29% of the time to righties. He strikes out righties 29% of the time and lefties 24% of the time - and those things are certainly related.
So he’s pretty limited against lefties in terms of getting whiffs, but the sinker/change combo function to get a ton of ground balls so it works out. He’s very good, and quite an appealing dynasty league pitcher at this point.
Luis Castillo dominated the Pirates but yeah, ho-hum, I mean what did you expect? He earned a 55.6% Strike%, a ridiculous number. I wonder if this wasn’t a conscious choice to just pound the zone against a bad offense, and it looks like maybe I’m onto something there. I sorted his season by Strike%:
So against Cleveland, Colorado, and Pittsburgh, he has gone way up there with the strike rate, and against Toronto, the Cubs, and the Angels - he’s been lower. The strike rate is more than just throwing strikes because you get a strike on a ball that is fouled off, but seems like there’s something there - and it would certainly make sense from a strategic standpoint. Why waste pitches against a team that is pretty unlikely to hit the long ball? Good stuff from Castillo, he’s been magnificent this year and seems to have taken his game to the next level since leaving Cincinnati, here are his Mariners numbers from the 2022-2023 MLB Main Dashboard.:
Oh baby it was Tyler Glasnow day! I have been offline most of the last two days so I’m missing stuff! Here’s what it looked like:
Just a little double-digit SwStr% to pop the top on his 2023 season. He threw a ton of strikes and did not allow much contact at all. 83 pitches thrown too - he’s ready to go, I’d regard him as a top-15 pitcher while he’s healthy. If I ranked SPs completely ignoring injury risk, I don’t know if there’s even five SPs I’d take over Glasnow. Certainly Strider, Cole, and McClanahan. Probably Ohtani, but then he enters the conversation pretty quickly. He’s the man, although I do have this love for him deeply ingrained in me after all my years of defending him as a Pirate fan when the rest of the city was saying he was no good. My days of youth on Facebook arguing with yinzers about the Pirates will never leave me.
Tanner Bibee was also fantastic. He had season-highs in strikeouts, SwStr%, CSW%, and Strike%.
He’s now at a 25% K% with a 6.6% BB%. The rest of the numbers we like most are pretty average (12.5% SwStr%, 46% Strike%), and the GB% is very, very low at 31%.
I think there will be some bad starts ahead, but yesterday was awesome and a good sign for him - and he should be started in all leagues - just don’t get over your skis about him, he has been far from dominant.
Only 8 pitchers have lower GB% than Bibee
Lauer
Cortes
Sears
Javier
Ober
Kaprielian
Scherzer
Lyles
You can make that work, but with a lower K%, it does get a bit dicey. You’re going to be giving up some homers with a GB% that low. And when you look at the list of very low GB% and strikeout that come up short of very good, it’s not a very impressive list. It’s a decent time to sell Bibee in redraft leagues, I’d say.
Luis Severino got just eight whiffs on 92 pitches against the Padres and walked three. Not a great sign, but no reason to hesitate - we’ll keep an eye on him.
On the hitting side, I saw that Nolan Jones got the call-up and the start the last two days. If we look at all levels on the MiLB dashboard, set the PA criteria to 150, and sort by OPS, Jones shows up at #2.
He has a dozen homers this year with that elite slash line. The K% has been fine, but he’s certainly a guy that is at risk of bloating past 30% in the Majors, and that would be a pretty big problem. If he can manage to keep that under 27%, he could be a very good fantasy hitter - so watch him closely moving forward.
Speaking of COORS Field, Francisco Alvarez took advantage and cranked his seventh homer of the Major League season. He’s now homered once every 15.4 PAs, only 15 hitters have 100+ PAs and a better rate than that.
The most appealing part of that is the 22.2% K%. Alonso, Ozuna, Tellez, Lowe, and Adolis have better PA/HR’s than Alvarez with a K% under 25%. He’s certainly looking like a very good Big League hitter right now, but it’s a little bit too early to say that with certainty. Regardless, he’s a must-add and must-start in all leagues at the catcher position. He’s currently an MFQ along with

I guess these emojis just work anywhere now. How long until we see emojis being used in newspapers? They are essentially a part of the language now, which I could be mad about - but I don’t think I’m old and grumpy enough for that now. Languages and communication methods change, and it’s not always a bad thing. I do get pretty annoyed with people who use GIFs/emojis more often than words, words are still best, but this other stuff can add more context and make things a little more interesting.
Rougned Odor’s contact rate over the last 30 days is beating his career average by ten points, and he led off yesterday. He’s had a pretty decent line early on in his Padres tenure:
He’s a somewhat interesting name for very, very deep leagues - and maybe a FAAB target tonight in certain situations.
Leody Taveras is on the HOT HITTER TRACKER.
Nice .825 OPS but it’s gotten there more with singles and doubles than with homers, but good to see him getting balls in play and using those wheels.
Anyways, good to be back on the keys after having to pass on it yesterday. I almost don’t even like ending these posts because there’s so much to explore and get into it and write about, but I’m a man with dependents and I can’t make my wife do everything… at least not on weekends.
