Happy Memorial Day! Shout out to the people who actually had to sacrifice something in their lives. The word sacrifice sure means wildly different things to different generations.
MacKenzie Gore was insanely good yesterday with a 21.7% SwStr% and a 58.8% Strike% - that’s ridiculous stuff. Seven innings, three hits, one run, eleven strikeouts, and just ONE walk. He’s improved to a really strong 29.8% K% and an 11.3% BB%. Since April 26th he’s at a 30.2% K% and an 8.6% BB% - so he’s been an ace this year and one of the few bright spots for the Nationals.
Still throwing a lot of heaters but he’s getting strikes with the pitch and backing it up with two really, really great breakers.
Merrill Kelly was also phenomenal yet again with ten strikeouts of his own over 6.2 innings in a win. He’s won five of his last six with a 32.5% K% and a 5.8% BB% in May.
No big changes in his pitch mix or anything like that to facilitate the great month of May:
I don’t really think this dude is anywhere near a 30% K% pitcher - and we should expect some downward regression moving forward, but even if that happens he’s still a more than solid fantasy option in this environment.
Gavin Stone got taken to the slaughterhouse giving up seven runs on 10 hits in just two innings. He threw a lot of strikes and got whiffs at a high rate, but yeah I mean he must have done something wrong! Threw some awful pitches that got hit a long way, I suppose. I don’t know, I never watch the games!
Let’s do a little Eury Perez check-in.
Basic game logs:
More interesting game logs:
So he’s been tapped out below 90 pitches and really hasn’t had a great start yet. The walks are a pretty big issue so far at 12.7%, but the Strike% is just a tick below league average so there should be some improvement coming in that regard.
The arsenal:
Another hot fastball that isn’t overwhelming hitters. It’s not a terrible SwStr% but that’s below average and not what you want to see from a guy that is pretty dependent on the pitch. It’s also been hit in the air a ton, which you really don’t like to see.
The slider and curveball have shown strong signs, but this guy probably just needs some refinement. I don’t think he’ll be a guy you regret missing on this year, but certainly, this discussion is always way different with dynasty-type leagues.
How about Bailey Ober next?
He had a nice 7:1 K:BB yesterday with a big 17.9% SwStr% and a 52.6% Strike%. He’s at a 16.7% K-BB% for the year but the SwStr% is way up there at 14.1%. You’d think he’d have a higher strikeout rate than he does.
He does line up on the left side of the trend line in the SwStr% vs. K% plot:
Yesterday, he bailed on the curveball entirely, reduced the changeup, and threw more sliders:
His does a lot of his work with the fastball at a 14.9% SwStr% and a 48% usage. That SwStr% would be pretty impossible to believe if this dude weren’t seven feet tall. He’s releasing that ball probably a foot closer to the batter than a lot of other pitchers - and that’s a huge advantage.
I can’t guarantee he’ll get the K% above 25%, but I wouldn’t be surprised. Regardless, he’s just very solid and should be started in close to all leagues.
Triston Casas launched a ball at 113.2 yesterday, his highest exit velo in the Majors. The results still aren’t there this year
.200/.317/.371, 28% K%, 6 HR, 0 SB
But in May, he has a ridiculous 12% Brl/PA with a .277/.360/.462 line and a .419 xwOBA. Those are both top-15 in the league, so I would think the slash line will continue to improve as we move forward.
Cal Raleigh is also looking very good in May as a current MFQ. He has an 8.3% Brl% this month with a super low 19% K%. He’ll have his good and bad streaks, but he’s still a very useful fantasy option at catcher and the dingers should keep coming.
Matt McLain is now up to an 80% contact rate with a rapidly descending 28% K%.
If he keeps up anything near an 80% contact rate that K% will have to be under 25%. The highest K% in the league for a hitter with a contact rate above 80% is Ha-Seong Kim at 24.4%, and the league average for those hitters is 17%.
McLain has been a hit machine so far with a .380 batting average. He’s homered just twice on his barrel rate of 8.8% which is around the league average, but he’s getting the ball in the air at a good rate (41% GB%).
Some comp hitters with his profile right now (look at the dials to see how I did this):
That’s a pretty good list, I’d say McLain is a guy that should be universally rostered for now.
Sadly this has come to an end and I have to stop now. On to the report!
