Request Player/Topic For Me to Discuss
Yesterday I recorded a podcast episode right here on the Substack to clear out the player requests, you can check that out here. It looks like there is a way to import it right into your podcast app on your phone, so click around looking or that if that suits your fancy.
Jon Gray had his first good start of the year and man, that was quite a turnaround.
Yesterday: 36% CSW%, 22.5% SwStr%, 32% K%, 0% BB%.
Before yesterday: 27% CSW%, 10.3% SwStr%, 14.5% K%, 10.7% BB%
His best pitch is the slider, and he maxed out its usage yesterday:
For the year the slider has still been quite good with an 18.2% SwStr% and a 54% GB%, but the fastball has been beaten up with an 8.3% SwStr% and a 15% Brl%. I think there are better days ahead for Gray, and this was good to see.
We also see this below in the notes:
Jon Gray's SL velo (36 pitches) UP 4.1mph to 87.5
That’s quite a change, and it will be something interesting to track moving forward.
The other standout SP performance was Mitch Keller, who went for a rare complete-game shutout against the Rockies.
Getting the Rockies on the road is one of the best matchups you can have, but Keller took full advantage. We can’t really nitpick about matchup when a dude goes nine innings, four hits, eight strikeouts, one walk.
We can nitpick a little bit about his continued below-average SwStr%. He got just a 10.7% SwStr% yesterday and he’s at 11.1% for the year. That said, his CSW% is at a better 30.5% and the K% is up at 28%. He’s getting a lot of called strikes and he’s one of these guys throwing the three fastball variations pretty much equally.
This is a bit of speculation, but I imagine that a high called strike rate and a pitch mix that features three fastball variations are correlated.
That’s just a beautiful pitch mix. Don’t get me wrong, I would really like for the SwStr% to be a couple of points higher, but there’s more than one way to skin a cat and Keller has been skinning a lot of cats this year.
Don’t be fooled by the good start from Jake Irvin, he had just a 5.4% SwStr% and a 13% BB% with the 22% K% from yesterday. The CSW% was 22.8%, which is very bad. Just a random outing there, and I don’t think Irvin is ready for the Bigs based on the two starts we’ve seen.
Dylan Cease is struggling. He started the year well, giving up just five earned runs in his first 24 innings. But his last four starts have been bad with 20 earned runs in 18 innings.
For the year:
» 25.9% K%
» 10.6% BB%
» 5.58 ERA
» 1.51 WHIP
» 27.3% CSW%
» 12.9% SwStr%
» 113 Stuff+
Cease is pretty similar to Alcantara in that he was overpriced after last season where his ERA was very lucky. He had a high walk rate last year, and he has a high walk rate this year. The bad news is with the K% and SwStr% being way down, I didn’t see that coming. Chances are he’ll rebound here and the K% will be on the way up soon, but it’s important to note that losses in K% hurt more with a bad BB%, and we know that Cease is very likely to have a bad BB% this year. I’d be a bit concerned about him, but it’s not like you can trade him for a good return right now so I guess you just need to hold on and ride it out.
Tony Gonsolin saw his velocity tick up on all of his pitches, you’ll see that below - so that’s a good sign that he’s getting back to full strength.
Braxton Garrett clearly reconsidered his life after getting blasted for 11 earnies by the Braves last week.
He said to hell with his four-seamer, changeup, and curveball, and threw cutters, sliders, and sinkers yesterday, with the cutter going up to a season-high 34% usage.
He didn’t do great in the box score, giving up four more earned runs, but the SwStr% was good at 13.8% and he limited it to just one walk. He’s still struggling overall with a 19% K% and an 11.3% SwStr%, so I guess he’s not really someone to roster in shallow leagues - but he is a guy with the raw talent to go on some really good runs.
Zac Gallen has 64 strikeouts and six walks this year. That’s a 31% K-BB%. If you take away his first start (cause why not), he has a 34.3% K% and a 1.8% BB% for a 32.5% K-BB%. That’s ridiculous. What a stud.
On the hitting side, Andy Ibanez has quietly gone for a .333/.357/.556 line in 28 PAs. He has a 13.6% Brl% and a 17.9% K%. He’s one of these guys that have turned the Tigers’ offense around in the last week or so. Zach McKinstry has also been good, here’s a look at that Tigers’ offense for the year:
Ibanez is 30 and McKinstry is 28, so it’s not like these are budding prospects. We probably don’t need to pay them much attention in fantasy, but they’re at least short-term adds in very deep leagues.
It really does look like the changes that they made to Comerica Park have made a big difference for hitters. Here are some numbers on that.
HR/FB
DET: 16.5%
League Average: 15.2%
HR/Brl
DET: 61.5%
League Average: 47.8%
SLG on FB
DET: .843
League Average: .798
I think we’re far enough into the season to say those are real indicators, so that’s good news for hitters in Detroit.
Let’s look at some good and bad hitters of the last two weeks before we hit publish.
OPS Leaders
OPS Losers
Plenty of interesting names on the list of losers.
As always, the general rule here is that short-term data only means something when you want it to mean something. If you have a guy on the losers list, don’t worry - small sample size. If you have a guy on the leaders list - hell yeah he’s a total stud now.
On to the normal report, I put all the best stuff behind the paywall again.
