I woke up at 7:15 today and was like what in the hell is going on. Trea baby is always up at 6:30 and usually our oldest daughter is up before seven as well, so I just immediately figured that everybody had died and I slept through it.
It’s happened a few times where I’ll wake up later than normal and get the kids and whatnot and then later I’ll say to my wife “wow the kids really slept well last night!” and then she’ll be like “Actually I was awake with all of them four different times and they didn’t really fall back asleep til 5am”. And at that point, I just pat her on the head and come downstairs to write these daily notes.
But today, nobody died, nobody was kidnapped, and nobody was up all night - it was just a yahtzee. All three kids slept until 7:30, it’s unheard of. This presents me with another chance to talk about conditional probability.
Here are the rough chances of each of my kids sleeping til 7:30
Kid 1: 40%
Kid 2: 90%
Trea Baby: 5%
So for me to sleep until 7:30, I need to hit all three of those percentages. So to figure out the chances of me sleeping til 7:30, we do this:
0.4 * 0.9 * 0.05 = 0.018.
So that’s like a 2% chance I hit on today. Although it’s possible that Trea Baby’s percentage is now much higher than 5%, baby brains tend to change rapidly so that’s a real moving target - it doesn’t make a ton of sense to just use the past data on that one.
I also can’t help but notice the coincidence with Trea Turner, my child’s namesake, going on Paternity Leave yesterday. Also, Trea Baby was born just over nine months ago. So there’s clearly some kind of connection here between myself and Trea Turner. I’m assuming that he will name this kid Jon Anderson Turner, even if it’s a girl.
I say that I named my son after Trea Turner a lot, and that’s because I did. But in reality, I just always thought that name was cool and my wife liked it - I never told her that I was thinking about Trea Turner when I came up with the idea. I also have always had the hard and fast rule that no child of mine will have a name longer than four letters. We keep things short and sweet here. There’s no need to show off with how many letters we can put in their names.
Pitchers - Yesterday
Remember that Chris Bassitt start to the year where he had no velo in spring training and then got absolutely annihilated in his first few starts? For the year now, he has 29 starts and a 3.69 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP - but a lower 22% K% and 7.2% BB%. So that’s a pretty bad 14.7% K-BB%, but the ERA and WHIP have been helpful - and he’s thrown a bunch of innings. So it’s been a nice bounce-back from him for how awful everything started. He took advantage of the Athletics last night for 18 whiffs and eight strong innings.
Dylan Cease continued his thing where he gets a bunch of whiffs (15 whiffs, 15.6% SwStr%), but has no command (38.5% Ball%) and ends with a bad box score line (5.1 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 7 K, 2 BB). He had a .357 BABIP yesterday but did give up a couple of homers and a 23.5% Brl%. I remind you again that his season .337 BABIP is the 5th-highest in the league. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with him in home league. He was dropped two weeks ago and I added him, and he has some nice matchups next week including a two-start week, but he hasn’t had a positive start since August 13th and has a 5.04 ERA on the year with a 16% K-BB%. I’m leaning towards just holding on and hoping for the best in that two-start week, but the bottom line here is that you don’t care at all and you’re probably all long free of Cease.
Nathan Eovaldi returned from a long time on the shelf (he did not rehab) and wasn’t good, although he did only throw 35 pitches.
2.9% SwStr%, 34.3% Strike%, 42.9% Ball%, 1:1 K:BB
The velo was still down:
So things aren’t looking very good for him. I wonder if the Rangers aren’t rushing him back a bit just to see if they can get some playoff starts out of him. We shouldn’t judge him much on yesterday, since it was his first outing since July 18th and was clearly only going to throw a couple of innings.
Bryce Miller was bad as well
97 pitches, 6.2% SwStr%, 46.4% Strike%, 37.1% Ball%, 2:1 K:BB
He’s now made 21 starts
21 GS, 3.83 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 22.5% K%, 4.8% BB%
So that’s pretty good. The K% is a bit low, but I do really like that he’s added the sinker and I’m interested in him for next year. He’s thrown 132.3 innings so far so he should clear 150 this year, which sets him up for a full workload next year. That fastball is very good, which is a huge key for a young pitcher.

Hitters
Jose Altuve is the talk of the town with three homers in the first three innings of the game yesterday. That’s pretty insane.
Here are your 2023 three-homer games:
That is seven hits and five homers in Altuve’s last two games. He’s scored six times and driven in five runs in that time, for a total of 78 DraftKings points in two games - that’s pretty good!
For the year:
308 PA, .321/.406/.563, 15 HR, 20.5 PA/HR, 17.5% K%, 12.0% BB%
His Brl% is 10.2% and the Contact% is at 80%. That makes him one of just four hitters with
300+ PA
10%+ Brl%
80% + Contact%
Those names are Acuna Jr., Betts, Tucker, and Altuve.
Unfortunately, Altuve has spent a ton of time on the shelf so he’s not qualified for the player rater, but for the last 30 days he’s the #8 hitter:
