A new resource is available to you all now concerning foot speed. The Google sheet here has home-to-first (how many seconds is your best effort from home plate to first) and max sprint speed for the last three seasons. You can see there who has added or lost speed. Just keep in mind that left-handed batters get a head start on the home-to-first, and this data isn’t adjusted for that.
I’m interested in my demographics here and I’m really trying to get Pair of Thieves to sponsor this blog because I love their underwear so so much. So please take this poll for me:
If female gets even 1%, I will assume people are lying to me. Anyways, thanks for doing that for me.
If you want to help, you can also tweet at PairOfThieves and tell them to sponsor my blog. I’m not asking for much money, I’m sure we can sell enough extra underwear for them to justify it, and really it’s not about the money anyways, I just want that sweet bear picture on my blog legitimately.
Lucas Giolito gave us another sign that he’s BACK
9 punchies
2 free boys
18 whiff daddies
For the season now he is at a 19.6 K-BB%, so close to the promised land.
He also added velocity on all three of his main pitches yesterday, adding 1.5mph to the four-seamer and getting it the whole way up to 94.3 mph on average yesterday. That’s a big deal, but don’t tell Jack Flaherty that!
Framber was the big show of the day with 42 fantasy points on a 12:0 K:BB. We wondered if he just might get more strikeouts this year with that new cutter he introduced last year. So far, he has done that with a 27% K% and a still-elite 4.8% BB%. That’s beautiful:
That 12.7% SwStr% is higher than usual but not a ton higher.
Here’s where he shows up on the SwStr% vs. K% plot:
That’s not all that interesting but it does kind of make me feel good to show you a bunch of dots and lines and colors and shit!
Brandon Pfaadt had another bad start in the box score but did have a good 14.8% SwStr%. His slider and changeup have gotten a bunch of whiffs so far but the fastball has been really awful.
It really seems like there is something to this with young pitchers. I’ve come across so many guys that have breaking pitches that work pretty well in the Majors, but they just aren’t supported by a good fastball and that ruins them. And a lot of the time, like right now, we find pitchers throwing that bad fastball more than 50% of the time which makes it really tough for them. It’s a small sample, of course, and 102 fastball thrown isn’t enough to judge him on - but yeah the 4.9% SwStr% shows it’s not fooling anybody and the 36% FB% is not a good thing to see - especially since he’s always given up a high FB%.
I think Pfaadt is still interesting, but he shouldn’t be started in medium-sized leagues right now, and he very well might end up back in AAA soon.
Louie Varland was really good yesterday against the Padres. A 14.7% SwStr% yesterday, and now he has a 28% K% and a 7% BB% for the year.
Wait, hold on, twenty-eight minus seven… is that… 21? More than 20!? Pick him up! Here’s one of just 13 SPs with a K-BB% above 20% and a SwStr% above 15% with 3 or more starts, although yeah I set that 3 GS criteria for the sole purpose of fitting him in here:
The arsenal:
Alek Manoah is at the bottom of the SwStr% list at just 3.2% yesterday. For the year:
» 9.1% SwStr%
» 17% K% (32 K)
» 13% BB% (25 BB)
Pretty gross.
I was on the “buy low” train with him a few turns through the rotation ago, but I suppose I’d be slowly shying away from that. Manoah was never a true ace in the sense that he was just dominating hitters. He’s never had a high K% and the stuff has always been just “fine”. I think he’ll be better than this moving forward, but I didn’t like him in the first place so that makes me a little bit more hesitant to say that everybody needs to hold on tight to him.
I do have that bet with DraftCheat where I took Manoah and he took Taj Bradley like a month ago. I’m not sure who is going to win that one, but maybe I’ll win by the bet by default if Taj doesn’t even qualify this year. I don’t know, didn’t read the fine print.
JJ Bleday is showing up in a few different places here, so we can talk about him.
The 1.131 OPS and 19% K% is a huge standout, but you can see just the 26 PAs there. Last season:
So the K% is way down this year, he’s well below 20 over his 145 PAs this year, and that’s a good sign. He’s hitting a lot of ground balls in the Majors but that wasn’t a big issue in AAA, and his 10% Brl% in AAA was pretty good.
I think his power is middling, especially since he’s in Oakland - but he looks like an improved hitter and the results have been there so far this year so you can give him a shot in deeper leagues.
The whole Athletics offense has been a surprise this year. Their team .691 OPS is only 10th-worst in the league and they definitely have a handful of guys that are decent or better for fantasy purposes:
Clarke Schmidt had a 29% K% but a 6.5% SwStr% yesterday against those Athletics, so that’s weird - but it was a good start for him and he is still on the Magic Formula Qualifiers list behind the paywall, so that’s good. I think he’s just going to be a frustrating pitcher this year, but he’s showing some good signs and can be added in deeper leagues if he wasn’t already for this two-start week.
There’s a whole lot more I could write but I am out of time. Be back tomorrow with more!
