Fantasy Baseball 2023 - Reviews, Previews, & Ranks: Intro/Glossary
Welcome to my previews, reviews, and ranks series! Throughout the fall and winter, I will be going team by team looking back at 2022 (and further back in some cases) with an eye on ranking players for the 2023 fantasy baseball season.
I have done some version of this over the last two seasons, and it’s a really fun time for me. It’s also pretty good content and will give readers a huge leg up on the competition when it comes time for drafting for 2023.
I will give you the relevant data and my opinions on each and every fantasy-relevant starting pitcher and hitter, and it will go on for months. I will have to get about two of these done a week to finish all thirty teams by February 1st, which is my soft target. Here is a quick explanation of some of the stuff you’ll see.
Subject to change, but for hitters I will be populating a Google Sheet with my rankings as I go, inserting each player in where I deem appropriate after I review them. I will also be giving 1-10 grades for
HRs
R+RBI
AVG
SB
Overall
And I will mark whether I think the hitter is “safe” (meaning a good bet to give you what you expect) and whether I think the hitter has "upside” (meaning they have the potential to smash their ADP).
I will also mark if the player will make my “short list”, a list of players I will be targeting in shallow leagues, and my “long list”, a list of players I would consider in those deep 50-round leagues. I really want the shortlist to be pretty short, to really just concentrate on the players I like the most.
For pitchers, I just have overall grades, safety, upside, shortlist, and long list.
Below you’ll find the glossary and the links to the Google Sheets I’m using to hold the rankings. The full work is reserved for paid subscribers to this SubStack, which is $7/month or $70/year. With that subscription, you get full access to the in-season stuff as well which includes
